Best New Tracks Of The Week: October 29th, 2023

MWAH <3 5.  And Still  - Peter Gabriel In total the collection of new material Peter Gabriel has released hasn't exactly been consistently satisfying. But he's managed to shine through a handful of times and this song sounded better and better to me every time. I love the sweeping compositional style and consistently catchy refrains throughout. I still have no idea what to make of his upcoming new album though.  Listen 4.  Brick By Brick  - Conway The Machine & Wun Two Okay, consider me surprised. My expectations were not high for Conway crossing over with lo-fi hip-hop beats artist Wun Two. What seemed like nothing more than a reason to release new material is actually off to a great start with Conway delivering some of his characteristically hard-hitting lines in appropriately lethal fashion. They pair great with a vintage-sounding instrumental highlighted by fluttering keys.  Listen 3.  Why? - Matmos Leave it to Matmos to show up on this list...

Best New Tracks Of The Week: May 7th, 2023

I'm a day late, sorry I was at Shaky Knees. Enjoy <3 5.  Four Kinds Of Horses  - Peter Gabriel In the ongoing march of new Peter Gabriel singles each coming with multiple versions this specific track may not stand out the most. Once again it's a little longwinded and Gabriel seems to assume a level of grandiosity for the track that it doesn't really do anything to earn. However, seeing it through proved to be a pretty enjoyable endeavor.  Listen 4.  Spit  - Poppy Especially in a light week this Poppy cover of the underrated Kittie song was going to stand out. As usual she isn't lacking for energy and the pummeling instrumentation is the perfect backdrop for her screams. Even if it comes off a bit formulaic it's a formula that works. Listen 3.  You Are The Beginning  - Boris/Uniform Prolific Japanese rock band Boris is teaming up with industrial act Uniform for a new collab album as you'd know if you've been anywhere near someone listening to this ne...

Best New Tracks Of The Week: February 12th, 2023

Yes this list is late, it was a busy weekend, let me live. Enjoy <3 5.  Sixers - The Hold Steady Am I gonna like this new Hold Steady album? For the second single in a row I feel like I should be docking points because it sounds so much like so many of their other songs but when push comes to shove for some reason the songwritery details Craig Finn weaves into everything just works on me. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the bar rocky piano finale to the song which feels even a bit too corny for The Hold Steady. Listen 4.  The Court  - Peter Gabriel I like parts of this song a LOT, the stark hook with its distant punches of echoing percussion is tailor-made for me to appreciate. While some of the song's intimate whispers can come off goofier than I think is intended I'm surprised just how much of this song stuck in my head after only a few times hearing it. It's not perfect but it definitely does enough.  Listen 3.  Swing   (In A Dream)  - Squi...
