Best New Tracks Of The Week: 4/7/24

Another late-night best new tracks from your nocturnal angel girl. Enjoy <3 5.  Silence  - Cloud Nothings Once again I think this single will fall short of blasting fans of early Cloud Nothings punky bombast away. But I think the band has settled into a punchy indie style that still carries more weight than most of their contemporaries. The combination of crashing drums and sticky refrains isn't rewriting anything but it's a formula I still find compelling.  Listen 4.  B2b  - Charli XCX When Charli claimed that her new album was going to be for the clubs, she wasn't kidding. In the absolute most literal interpretation of that promise possible, she delivered two singles this week tributing the genre's classics and one of its most beloved styles of performance. For this song, she recruits Gesaffelstein a combination the feels almost too good to be true. His pulsating contributions make this the darkest and murkiest club vibe Charli has served up yet even in spi...

Best New Tracks Of The Week: March 11th, 2024

Late again, I have a good excuse this time though (she doesn't have a good excuse.) 5.  Wild God  - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds After a trio of albums under the Bad Seeds name that very fittingly saw Nick Cave exploring something more somber, introspective, and poetic, he got weird again on a 2021 collaboration with Warren Ellis. Now that bizarre tone and style of songwriting that's always existed in his music is coming revving back to the Bad Seeds in this new single. I appreciate his uniquely bizarre imagery and the way the song dramatically rises throughout. Listen 4.  Summon  - Jlin As has been the case throughout her career Jlin is a master of texture. Leaning away from some of the grinding electronics deployed on last year's EP this song focused more on the combination of an array of chimes with what sounds like some of the tensest strings I've heard anywhere so far this year. The result is quite striking at first but it's something I settled into more and m...

Best New Songs Of The Week: February 6th, 2022

I don't really have anything to say about this week from a high spun cultural observation standpoint but I did recently release a video on the Music Corner YouTube channel about how terrible the charts have been recently, so maybe one of these songs will be a big hit. 5.  John Woo Flick  - Conway The Machine (feat. Benny The Butcher & Westside Gunn) These three have enough tracks together for a greatest hits album and while this isn't anywhere near the best it does have the chemistry you'd expect from them at this point. They deliver verses that are separate in composition but built on one another and show off the similarity in all of their talents and the reasons they work so well together.  Listen 4.  Saoko - Rosalia Rosalia's newest single is short but makes the most of its runtime. The rumbling beat is an absolute hard hitter and she brings the vocal intensity it deserves with both the primary vocals and the impressive array of background singing. The song i...

List Week Chapter 2: Top 10 EPs Of 2017

Image
Top 10 EPs Of 2017: Here we have yet another list that may need some adjustments in years to come, but not quite yet. With the rise of the "Mixtape" in the Soundcloud crowd and the short 20-30 minute album making a comeback in a post Desiigner's "New English" world the EPs list is coming down to a very specific classification section. It's to be determined where it will go in the future and we can decide as a whole next year. We just have to understand that an EP is anything that's called an EP and leave it at that.  Catch XXXTENTACION'S "17" and Ski Mask The Slump God's "You Will Regret" in the album list as that's what they were marketed as, despite the fact that some of these EPs significantly out last them in length, technicalities. 10. David Bowie - No Plan EP David Bowie's posthumous EP came out very early in the year but that's no reason to forget about it as it brings the house on its 3 new ...
