Best New Tracks Of The Week: 4/7/24

Another late-night best new tracks from your nocturnal angel girl. Enjoy <3 5.  Silence  - Cloud Nothings Once again I think this single will fall short of blasting fans of early Cloud Nothings punky bombast away. But I think the band has settled into a punchy indie style that still carries more weight than most of their contemporaries. The combination of crashing drums and sticky refrains isn't rewriting anything but it's a formula I still find compelling.  Listen 4.  B2b  - Charli XCX When Charli claimed that her new album was going to be for the clubs, she wasn't kidding. In the absolute most literal interpretation of that promise possible, she delivered two singles this week tributing the genre's classics and one of its most beloved styles of performance. For this song, she recruits Gesaffelstein a combination the feels almost too good to be true. His pulsating contributions make this the darkest and murkiest club vibe Charli has served up yet even in spi...

New Blue Sun - Andre 3000

Image
Andre 3000 is famous, quite obviously, for being a rapper. The ATL legend served as one half of Outkast one of the best and most influential rap groups of all time. But since the pair called it quits between them Andre has been remarkably quite musically only making a handful of appearances in the nearly 20 years since. Though he is surprising fans with his long-awaited debut solo album its definitely not the album that many fans were hoping for. New Blue Sun  is a long and very indulgent ambient jazz album which prominently features Andre playing flute alongside a variety of expansive and occasionally quite minimal compositions.  Read More:  I had a lot of thoughts on this album before I even got the chance to hear it. Unlike a lot of the more idiotic rap fans online I don't hold any resentment against Andre for going in this direction artistically as he's always been very clear with fans on where their expectations for a new album should actually be set. But as someone ...

Ventura - Anderson .Paak: Review

Image
Anderson .Paak is a multi-talented rapper and singer who has been thrust into the limelight in recent years following a series of critically acclaimed releases that helped the rapper build up a committed fanbase and score multiple crossover hits.  Review By Lavender: .Paak continues to surprise me. A few years after it came out I revisited his first album Venice  and while it was clearly not the project its follow-up was, I was shocked to find out just how good it was and that I hadn't heard it at the time. But after hearing Paak's excellent guest spots on Dr. Dre's Compton  and listening to his excellent 2016 project Malibu  I was already hooked on the multi-talented artist. Paak had a very memorable collaboration with Knxwledge as NxWorries on the album Yes Lawd !   and then took 2017 off of studio work for the most part in order to watch and wait as his fantastic music became more and more popular each day. 2018 was a busy year for Paak as early on...

James Blake - Assume Form: Review

James Blake, has been up to this point one of the best, most creative and most consistent artists of this decade. Since coming up as a dubstep infused experimentalist in the early 2010's with EPs like Klaiverwerke and Enough Thunder, James Blake gained popularity and set the stage for his spectacular debut self-titled album James Blake. The album was met with critical acclaim and was one of only 3 10/10 scores that Music Corner gave out that year, as well as awarding it our album of the year nod. Since his experimental bedroom electronica masterpiece Blake has dropped two fantastic album sin its wake. 2013's Overgrown was a much less jagged and experimental album that relied on gorgeous layers of backing instrumentation and spacious atmospheres to succeed. James Blake vocally took more of a center stage than ever before on his third album The Colour In Anything  which was surprised dropped in 2016. Softer and more distant instrumentals and huge sparse compositions meant that...
