11:11 - Pinegrove: Review

Image
Pinegrove are a New Jersey indie rock and who have spent the last decade crafting a unique and extremely recognizable blend of lo-fi indie rock, emo and folk that has significantly divided listeners. The band has a dedicated fanbase but also sports plenty of haters citing how similar all of their songs sound and the occasionally shortcomings of their lyrics.  Review By Lav: While I've never been crazy about Pinegrove I'm also far from a hater. They have a greatest hits album worth of spectacular songs which I've reflected in my year end lists over the past five years. As much as I hate to play into stereotypes however, listening to the band for an entire album has never been something I'm a huge fan of. With so much instrumentally familiarity you really have to be invested in two things, the progression of each song and the lyrical vision. If both or even one of those is executed well they can create very compelling songs, but much like all of their records that isn...

Best New Songs Of The Week: January 9th, 2022

Happy New Year babes. For the first time in 2022 we are looking at all the new singles dropped this week and highlight the best of the bunch. Normally this time of year its pretty slow all around but there are some great albums coming out in the next few weeks and the singles aren't lacking behind. Here are the five best new tracks this week: 5.  Hard Drive Gold  - alt-j The alt-j renaissance marches on with their most upbeat single of this new era. With a deep selection of wonky instrumentation and the charming vocal gymnastics we've come to expect from the band the track builds up to a rewarding chorus. It's all done in the kooky way that only alt-j can. 4.  Respirate  - Pinegrove If you know Pinegrove you pretty much know this song. The anxious observational lyricism with a boyish lo-fi charm and the simple indie instrumental which erupts into a detailed arrangement of backing drums and horns. This is exactly what the band does well.  3.  Titanic  -...

Best New Songs Of The Week: November 14th

The five best tracks that came out this past week listed below: 5.  Waiting  - PUP The newest single from the PUP catalog is an absolute rager that explodes with jagged instrumentation and that classic punk attitude and flair we've come to expect from the band. They pull off a surprisingly emotional edge to the whole thing as the songs wonders why you continue to wait around for someone, when all signs tell you to just go. It's a punk song with more to it than meets the eye.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHG36NyvaUk 4.  La Fama  - Rosalia Feat. The Weeknd The latest in Rosalia's seemingly infinite streak of high profile collaborations is R&B crossover king The Weeknd. It actually follows the pairs collaboration on last years Blinding Lights Remix  but takes a much less pop approach sonically. It deploys a much darker instrumental palette reminiscent of Abel's early days but with a distinct Latin sound, and the blend pulls you in from it's very first ...

Marigold - Pinegrove: Review

Image
Pinegrove are a New Jersey based indie folk band fronted by Evan Stephens Hall who rose to prominence in in 2016 when they released their critically acclaimed debut album Cardinal . The group entered a strange hiatus in 2017 when Hall made a Facebook post responding to anonymous allegations of "sexual coercion" and cancelled the bands upcoming tour. Their follow-up record Skylight  appeared on streaming services in 2018 and now two years later the band are prepared for their proper comeback on Marigold . Review By Lavender: I really enjoyed Pinegrove's 2016 breakout record Cardinal  and I had a feeling that the band was poised for a big breakout moment. The bands next few years had some strange controversy and a cancelled tour but I even continued to enjoy the music that they put out on their Skylight  record. After enjoying the singles leading up to this album and remembering how much I enjoyed their debut album I got really excited for Marigold , and for good rea...
