Best New Songs Of The Week: January 9th, 2022

Happy New Year babes. For the first time in 2022 we are looking at all the new singles dropped this week and highlight the best of the bunch. Normally this time of year its pretty slow all around but there are some great albums coming out in the next few weeks and the singles aren't lacking behind. Here are the five best new tracks this week:

5. Hard Drive Gold - alt-j
The alt-j renaissance marches on with their most upbeat single of this new era. With a deep selection of wonky instrumentation and the charming vocal gymnastics we've come to expect from the band the track builds up to a rewarding chorus. It's all done in the kooky way that only alt-j can.

4. Respirate - Pinegrove
If you know Pinegrove you pretty much know this song. The anxious observational lyricism with a boyish lo-fi charm and the simple indie instrumental which erupts into a detailed arrangement of backing drums and horns. This is exactly what the band does well.

3. Titanic - Earl Sweatshirt
Another single and another hit for Earl with further production from Black Noi$e. His hard hitting flows and creative rhyme schemes are as refreshing of a sound as ever and the surreal production is a great compliment for his vocal intensity. Earl seems to be setting up for another highly acclaimed album next week.

2. You Will Never Work In Television Again - The Smile
One of the most anticipated projects of 2022 is The Smile's debut album. The project consists of Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead with Tom Skinner of Sons Of Kemet on drums and producer Nigel Godrich. All that hype existed even before we knew that it was going to be the most intense and punchy song Thom Yorke has made with any of his projects in well over a decade. This thing is a snarling post punk rager that introduces us to what will certainly be one of the most talked about albums of the year.

1. Funny Girl - Father John Misty
Step one, Father John Misty is back. Check. Step two, his return lead single is a smoldering old Hollywood style big band ballad. Check. Those are the only two steps you need to top this list and emerge as the most talked about indie single of the year so far, even if that's not saying much. Even once the excitement of his return died down the tracks momentum didn't stop because everyone started to realize how insanely good it is. Nothing else that came out this week ever really stood a chance.
