Best New Tracks Of The Week: November 12th, 2023

This was just one of those week. Sometimes good releases pile on top of each other and there are at LEAST 10 songs I could have included. But for my own sanity here are the five best new songs I heard this week. 5.  Luna  - Stillblue Another inexplicably blissful new single from Stillblue. While it will certainly remind you of the band's other new singles from this year, they're starting to prove exactly why this is their sound. This track features an expansive second half that might be among the grandest things the group has done yet and it pays off all the poignant patience deployed up to that point perfectly.  Listen 4.  My Room   - Ty Segall Ty Segall showing up and dropping a song that sounds more like Radiohead in the 90s than Radiohead themselves did in the 90s was not on my 2023 bingo card. But honestly, I'll take it I love the sour wining guitar leads and as much as Ty can conjure with his voice at its loudest he manages to makes quite a bit of a r...

Best New Songs Of The Week: May 22nd, 2022

At the 11th hour, I returned home from vacation having only recently remembered I had to write and publish the best tracks of the week. Here they are. Enjoy <3. 5. 2001 - Foals While Foals have basically been in their dance-rock era for quite a while now they finally leaned heavily into the disco influence on this track and made their best single from this era. It's certainly not complicated and I wouldn't say it has much of the extravagant rush that you might expect from a good Foals track, but it's bouncy and charming in the way the good disco revival music has to be.  Listen 4. Funeral Solution  - Thee Oh Sees After not loving the last few Oh Sees records, this was a punch in the face that I was excited for. The band needs less than two minutes to absolutely pummel you with chugging riffs, short screamed vocal refrains and an absolutely filthy mix. This one is simple, it will crush you, you should let it. Listen 3. Through The Fires  - Angel Olsen Angel Olsen delive...

Best New Songs Of The Week: May 1st, 2022

I'm late, sorry, I was at a music festival. Let's not waste any more time. Enjoy <3 5.  Falling Apart (Right Now)  - Wilco When Wilco announces a new album it's still an event in indie music. When that announcement comes with a short but catchy and slightly psychedelic tinged lead single it is even more of a moment. Nothing about this is mind blowing but it's a very solid start for one of the more respected acts in all of indie to return with. Listen 4.  Big Time  - Angel Olsen If you ever hoped that Angel Olsen would try her hand at writing a Courtney Barnett song I think this is the closest you'll get. While it doesn't have the same kind of snarky attitude to it and the instrumentation is much more folk inspired this is one of the wordiest tracks I've ever heard from Angel Olsen. While I do enjoy what she has to say I also can't help but think the song is crying out for a climactic moment to complete it.  Listen 3.  Hello, Hi  - Ty Segall Ty's e...

Rapid Fire Reviews: Steadfastly Indie

Image
An extremely busy time for me is finally settling down and I'll have time to focus on a lot of records I've wanted to review over the last month or two through rapid fire reviews. While there is still a ton of exciting indie music coming out on a weekly basis in 2021 it is also worth looking back at some of the staples of the genre whether in the 2010's or 2000's to see what they've been up to recently.  Draw Down The Moon  - Foxing I've always had a weird relationship with Foxing, seemingly be drawn to the albums that most people are least impressed by. While they're debut is certainly solid I though the follow-up Dealer  impressively embraced post-rock fusion in a way that felt more instrumentally impressive than most indie rock bands were capable of. This is why I was surprised to feel to meh about the bands previous record Nearer My God  in 2018. Regardless I was willing to engage with the band given the clear talent in their line-up and the fact that th...

First Taste - Ty Segall: Review

Image
Ty Segall is an American rock artist who has been pushing the boundaries of modern rock and indie music for over a decade now by dabbling in psychedelic rock, garage rock and punk. He has released a myriad of records as a solo artist and in a number of short lived collaborative groups that consistently push for new sounds and have been lobbied with plenty of critical acclaim. Review By Lavender: Due to the absolutely massive amount of releases Ty has under his belt it is difficult to encapsulate him with one style or even one quality of release. The most comparable artist to Ty Segall is definitely King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard as not only do their styles have a ton of crossover but they have both released a ton of material that covers a wide range of genres, and not always perfectly.  While I have really not been head over heels in love with a Ty Segall album since 2014's Manipulator  the last one I even took the time to review was last years Freedom's Goblin ...
