Strays - Margo Price: Review

Image
Margo Price is a Nashville via Illinois country singer who released her first two albums on Jack White's Third Man Records. Between her second and third albums, she shifted to Loma Vista and Strays  marks her second project put out on that label. Review by Lav: Margo Price has been a beacon of country music for a number of years now. I fell head over heels in love with her debut album Midwest Farmer's Daughter  and while I didn't love either of her next two records quite as much I still enjoyed her genre fluidity and the unique flavors she brings as a songwriter. I bounced back and forth on some of the singles from Strays  and while it might be her most inconsistent project to date, it also has thematic throughlines that make it worth listening to in its entirety. The record was teased with three singles and I'd like to just skip right to what I and pretty much everyone else seems to agree is the best song on the album. Change Of Heart  kicks off with a Black Keys-st...

Best New Songs Of The Week: August 28th, 2022

After the first time this year that there were so many good songs I had to include an honorable mention, we've got the second week in a row of less than stellar results. So be it, there are a lot of good albums coming out recently and going forward to fill in the gaps.  5.  One Twenty Two  - Botch Remember Botch? Probably not as it's been like 20 years since the heavy metal band last released any new material. This new song won't necessarily explain the absence or push their sound forward into anywhere crazy or unpredictable it is raw as fuck and the repetition helps sell the catchy refrain it's built around. In a year where Gospel came out of nowhere to become a new critical darling, it isn't that farfetched to imagine a similar fate for Botch. Listen 4.  All You Do  - Magdalena Bay When B-Sides make the singles list you know it's been a slow week but that's just how the cards fell this week. This track which wasn't good enough to land on their somewhat...

That's How Rumors Get Started - Margo Price: Review

Image
Margo Price is a Nashville based country singer who first broke out as a signee to Jack White's Third Man Records. This is her third record and her first since leaving Third Man Records, which is produced entirely by Sturgill Simpson.  Review By Lav: I love Margo Price's debut album Midwest Farmers Daughter  to this day and I was extremely excited for her future. While her sophomore record wasn't quite as much of a hit with me and I was skeptical about why she separated from third man records, hearing that Sturgill Simpson has such a big hand in this record made me more confident it wouldn't be an attempt at going commercial. Now that the album is here for the most part I enjoy it, and it avoids pitfalls that can make modern country so agonizing.  The record a few singles of which I only disliked one, Stone Me . The track is a piano ballad without much poise to it and an insultingly basic hook that really didn't do much for me in between boring verse passages. Heart...
