Rapid Fire Reviews: Why I've Been Gone

Image
Hey girlies. I'm trying to catch up from a weekend where I did basically nothing on this blog or really on any of my other creative projects. That's because I was enjoying Shaky Knees music festival so what better to return with than some rapid fire reviews of a few artists I saw while there, and really enjoyed. <3 (watch my moves)  - Kurt Vile It doesn't feel like it's been 4 years since Kurt Vile's last album, but time just moves differently when it comes to him. His psychedelic meets folk music style feels like it's always been around and despite fading pretty heavily out of the public eye when between album cycles it just always seems like Kurt has a prescence in the world of indie music. Given how consistent his discography is and how universally appealing his style is I was excited for this album, even more so after a few singles I enjoyed. I'm not sure why but I wasn't expecting this thing to be as long as it is turning in 15 tracks that stretc...

Best New Tracks Of The Week: March 27th, 2022

Another week that absolutely filled up the stat sheet with lots of new releases from notable names. While there wasn't a grand, highly anticipated comeback or massive pop collaboration to steal the spotlight there was something new this week for just about anybody and the best of the bunch are here.  5.  If We Get Caught  - Bloc Party After their last few singles I had been begging Bloc Party to dig their heels in and drop something that really rips, but it turns out the secret to making their best single of this era so far was to lean into their sentimentality. There's something very sweet and innocent about the fear of getting caught and the expression of love as if it's the very last thing you'll ever get to say to someone. The song is sweet and infinitely endearing.  Listen 4.  Lost  - Zola Jesus Even though you can never be sure what to expect from Zola Jesus, you can always expect it to be good and this certainly is. The chambered mix of the song with...

We WIll Always Love You - The Avalanches: Review

Image
The Avalanches are an Australian trio most well known for their heavy use of sampling and their critically acclaimed 2000 album Since I Left You . The band waited 16 years to follow the record up with the feature heavy Wildflower  in 2016 and have thankfully taken a shorter turnaround releasing this, their 3rd album, 20 years after Since I Left You . Review By Lav: I love The Avalanches. I have loved Since I Left You  since I first heard it sometime around 10 years ago and I was thrilled to see the band return on Wildflower  which I also thoroughly enjoyed.  Despite my love of the bands work I wasn't expecting quite as much from this record. The primary reasons being that it was less sample based than either of their first two projects and I thought the singles leading up to the album were a bit of a mixed bunch despite some major highlights. As it turns out there are still plenty of samples used perfectly all over the record, the original instrumentals are used...

Thursday HYPE Thread: Thursday, October 12th, 2017

After a slow one last week we kick it into high gear with 7 new releases across all genres and quality expectations. Let's get into it. 7. "Ogilala" William Patrick Corgan Better known as Billy Corgan the frontman of once great rock band Smashing Pumpkins, the music has certainly gone downhill as the line up of musicians surrounding Corgan constantly changed over the years. Though he's far from heyday he also hasn't crashed yet and even though some of his most recent work is just plain boring, it's not outright bad, here's to hoping he can turn it around for a late career comeback effect, but I wouldn't hold my breath. 6. "Carry Fire" Robert Plant Here we are again, this time Plant of the great Led Zeppelin is dropping his 11th album as a solo artist. Coming off a solo career high point in 2014 with Lullaby... And The Ceasless Roar it's an uphill battle to expect Plant will come back with a classic. The singles have been managab...
