Thursday HYPE Thread: Thursday, October 12th, 2017

After a slow one last week we kick it into high gear with 7 new releases across all genres and quality expectations. Let's get into it.

7. "Ogilala" William Patrick Corgan
Better known as Billy Corgan the frontman of once great rock band Smashing Pumpkins, the music has certainly gone downhill as the line up of musicians surrounding Corgan constantly changed over the years. Though he's far from heyday he also hasn't crashed yet and even though some of his most recent work is just plain boring, it's not outright bad, here's to hoping he can turn it around for a late career comeback effect, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

6. "Carry Fire" Robert Plant
Here we are again, this time Plant of the great Led Zeppelin is dropping his 11th album as a solo artist. Coming off a solo career high point in 2014 with Lullaby... And The Ceasless Roar it's an uphill battle to expect Plant will come back with a classic. The singles have been managable but not fantastic and thats probably the most realistic expectation to have for the album.

5. "Mr. Davis" Gucci Mane
Gucci for as prolific as he is has taken his time with this one, well relatively. After he released a quality tape earlier this year in Droptopwop the next Mr. Davis follow up has been delayed twice since it's initial release date. Usually the expectations would be low for Gucci but he has taken to Twitter to build up hype for the project for weeks.

4. "MASSEDUCTION" St. Vincent
If the album had been announced yesterday it would be at the top of this list. St. Vincent is coming off of a few fantastic releases in a row solidifying her status in the industry. Unfortunately with that came the announcement that she'd be working with pop coture Jack Antanoff. The 3 singles have done a great job at losing hype and lowering expectations. It's possible to be optimistic and think about what Anne Clark has accomplished before but in all likelylihood this could be the worst St. Vincent album to date.

3. "Lotta Sea Lice" Kurt Vile and Courtney Barnett
The best Kurt and Courtney you've heard about since Nirvana, they both released indie darling albums back in 2015 and here 2 years later the hipsters dream team is ready to deliver a full length project. Courtney has proven before she's capable of slowing is down effectively on songs like "Depreston" and "Avant Gardner so there's no reason to think this won't be an indie gem. The only reason not to load up your hype cannons is that they may not put the work into this collaboration that they would on a solo effort, but they're music is so effortlessly good otherwise that they could probably just stumble into greatness.

2. "The Saga Continues" Wu-Tang Clan
Wu-tang is back? Wu-Tang is back, like they never left. With RZA and DJ Mathmatics behind the scenes on production all of our favorite MCs return. Ghostface, Method Man, Redman, RZA, Raekwon, Deck and Cappadonna. Usually you wouldn't be excited for all the old-heads to come together and make an Album but the talent here is undeniable and everyone working on the project insists it's a Wu-Tang return to form.

1. "Colors" Beck
After far too long a wait Beck is back. His first album since 2014's Grammy winning Morning Phase. After a long build up and singles sometimes years apart it feels giddy that the album is finally here. Beck has been impossible to pin down since 1994 and when a new album drops it's almost never what's expected. Year after year Beck drops some of the best albums of the year and there's no reason to expect he won't be in the hunt again.
