Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers - Kendrick Lamar: Review

Image
Kendrick Lamar is a California rapper who spent the 2010's becoming one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful artists in all of music. 2015's To Pimp A Butterfly  was one of the most universally acclaimed albums in decades and the follow-up 2017's Damn.  served to break Kendrick directly into the mainstream. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers  comes 5 years later and was released as a double album with no singles and very little promotional material. Review By Lav: How do I even start a review like this? If you asked me what my favorite album of the 1960's was, the 70's, 80's, 90's, or 00's I could give you an answer but only after an agonizing amount of pouring through my favorite records trying to separate something from the pack. Two and a half years ago when I called Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly  the best album of the 2010's it felt like a formality, the OBVIOUS pick. How do you tackle someone who climbed the mou...

Of Mics And Men EP - Wu-Tang Clan: Review

Image
Wu-Tang Clan is a legendary New York hip hop collective that truly needs no introduction. The group released one of the most acclaimed and influential hip hop albums of all time in the early 90s and the individual members have a laundry list or critical and commercial successes in their back catalogs. A handful of the remaining members of Wu-Tang got together to release a brief 20 minute EP of new material inspired by the upcoming Showtime documentary series about the group. Review By Lavender: Since the moment in 1993 when Wu-Tang dropped one of my favorite albums of all time Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)  we have had a near constant stream of good to amazing content from the various members. Liquid Swords, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Supreme Clientele and Return To The 36 Chambers  proved that the various members had a lot left in the tank, but as far as collective Wu-Tang project they haven't really released much else that is essential. Due to the complex and intr...

Czarface Meets Ghostface - Czarface and Ghostface Killah: Review

Czarface Meets Ghostface is a collaborative hip hop album between hip-hop supergroup Czarface, made up of producer 7L, MC Esoteric and former Wu-Tang member Inspectah Deck, with another former Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah. The project is a spiritual sequel to last years Czarface, Meets Metalface collaboration with MF DOOM. Given the classic rap pedigree of the MCs and the consistent success of all involved in recent years and collaborations there was no reason not to expect high quality performances across the board on this collaboration. Review By Lavender: Both of the Czarface albums are good, the MF DOOM collab album last year was good, Ghostface Killah is good, all of his collab albums are good, Wu-Tang is good. I expected this to be good. It is good. This review is gonna be redundant because I know this is a good album and so do you. Nothing you'll hear on here is new from the oldhead inspired lowkey beats and superhero themes to the tight lyricism and c...
