Czarface Meets Ghostface - Czarface and Ghostface Killah: Review

Czarface Meets Ghostface is a collaborative hip hop album between hip-hop supergroup Czarface,
made up of producer 7L, MC Esoteric and former Wu-Tang member Inspectah Deck, with another
former Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah. The project is a spiritual sequel to last years Czarface,
Meets Metalface collaboration with MF DOOM. Given the classic rap pedigree of the MCs and the
consistent success of all involved in recent years and collaborations there was no reason not to
expect high quality performances across the board on this collaboration.

Review By Lavender:
Both of the Czarface albums are good, the MF DOOM collab album last year was good,
Ghostface Killah is good, all of his collab albums are good, Wu-Tang is good. I expected this to be
good. It is good.

This review is gonna be redundant because I know this is a good album and so do you. Nothing
you'll hear on here is new from the oldhead inspired lowkey beats and superhero themes to the
tight lyricism and cutthroat demeanor. What they present is another chapter in the refinement of
a style that has been around for a long time and spawned many classics and they very much do
it justice. We open up with Macho Man Randy Savage giving a spoken word intro and from there
we are off to the races. Songs like Face Off, The King Heard Voices and Iron Claw are all solid
tracks that feature some excellent production from 7L that mixes in some soul and superhero
themed samples into some heavy but distant bass driven beats that feels very comfortable for
these MCs. Speaking of these MCs they all do an excellent job across these tracks and across
the album as one never really lets the other two down and they find cool ways to play off of each
other consistently.

Right after the album’s first leg we have two of my favorite tracks on the entire project starting with
Czarcade '87. The song is by far the grooviest on the entire project and the bouncy production is a
huge highlight, thankfully the quick verses that Deck and Esoteric trade off throughout the songs
short run time are more than satisfactory and it all wraps up in one of the albums best moments.
For one of the most memorable tracks look to the thematic Powers And Stuff which sees children
picking sides of their favorite mythical superheroes and pitting Czarface and Ghostase against one
another. They play off this idea with some fantastic lyrical quirks and the sample of the children is
mixed perfectly into the tune creating yet another big highlight.

The next songs aren't quite as tight of a model as Masked Superstar opens up with a great verse
from Ghostface Killah but never quite hits its stride after that and ends up being a kind of forgettable
point. And the technically impressive Morning Ritual lets down a little bit in the lyrics department with
a silly story that feels like it deserves a little more development and some less silly lyrical content
spread throughout it. But it's not long before we are right back in the midst of the good stuff.

Super Soldier Serum features Deck's best performance on the entire record and one of the best
beats that makes use of the superhero theme. You really can't understate how important 7L's
production was to selling this album as some true heavyweight rap veterans going at it. Mongolian
Beef is another great track that sees Ghostface opening up the song with a much more
unconventional flow than anything else we hear on the album but it really does go just as hard and
ultimately is the lead in to another one of the albums most memorable moments.

That leaves us with the outlying Listen To The Color a long song with numerous beat switchups that
features some decent bars and flows but is a little bit hit or miss as it transitions from one sound or
MC to another, and the closing track Post Credits Scene which is actually a pretty great and hard
hitting outro but is just a little bit too short for my taste and feels like it ends sooner than it should have.

This is a super solid album from nearly every way you can look at it, excellent production, fantastic
performances and a very solid theme. Ghostface, Deck and Esoteric bring is consistently and few
verses fail to land meaning there are no real duds in the tracklist. The consistency is sharp and the
delivery is worthy of the title of these hip hop legends clashing together, this one should please
everyone who comes across it. 8/10
