Best New Tracks Of The Week: 3/31/2024

Now that I'm recovered enough to have opinions again a week full of big swings fell right into my lap. See what hit it out of the park and what completely struck out.  5.  Alter Ego  - Doechii (feat. JT) This is definitely a tricky one but in a week like this, it belongs on the list. Doechii and City Girls rapper JT is a combination I was THRILLED for and boy do they deliver. The two verses on this song are intense, pummeling, verbose, and completely unstoppable avalanches of charisma and momentum. Unfortunately, no matter how many times I try I just cannot get behind this chorus. Where both rappers make the intensity of their performance sound great on the verse the hook is just purely annoying in a way that is so blown out it's difficult to swallow. It's a tricky assessment on a song that has some of the most impressive performances I've heard all year.  Listen 4.  Gasping Dust  - Full Of Hell (feat. Ross Dolan) Is this song only a minute long, yes. But b...

Best New Tracks Of The Week: 2/4/2024

This week was headlined by a major new release in the electronica world. See where it laded among a series of promising indie singles.  5.  Point Him Out  - That Mexican OT (feat. DaBaby) I was late coming around to That Mexican OT's big hit Johnny Dang  last year but eventually, the song grew on me a lot as I continued to hear it on the charts. So far this year he's shifted away from the faster and more slick flows that made the track so unique into something harder-hitting. I wasn't crazy about it on his first new single but it works better here with an assist from DaBaby who fits right into this style.  Listen 4.  Sideways  - JT On her second solo single JT continues to experiment with a colder and less expressive demeanor than much of her City Girls music. On Sideways  it's even more of an embrace without some of the confident interludes and attention-grabbing jokes involved.  But what results may be an even more focused and impressive di...

Kali Uchis - ORQUIDEAS: Review

Image
Review by Lav: I've been a big fan of Kali Uchis for quite a while and reviewed all her major projects on the blog. I showed out plenty of love for her 2018 album Isolation . Since then, it's been a lot of 6's and 7's for her work as she's continued to put out quality music but not quite reach the same peaks. In early 2023 she promised two new albums, one in English and Spanish. A few months later she shared her English album Red Moon In Venus , which I thought was solid though unspectacular outside of its smash hit Moonlight . And now less than a year later, she's delivering on her promise to share a second Spanish album.  ORQUIDEAS led off with a trio of singles that I like quite a bit. Munekita  came first and it's the most obvious banger imaginable. It sports dynamic features from El Alfa and a killer appearance in particular from JT of City Girls. It set the tone for some great collaborations on the album which was followed by the third single Labios Mor...

2020 Year End Lists Chapter 5: The Top 100 Singles Of 2020

Image
Singles are the engine upon which the music industry runs. From stan Twitter to the Hot 100 the best way to drum up hype and all the revenue that comes with it is on the back of a great single. For the 5th straight year  it's time to look at all the great singles released by artists new and old throughout 2020 and rank them. Unlike the songs and albums lists that will follow this one over the next 2 days this isn't strictly about the best in terms of sheer quality alone. The list takes quality into consideration alongside cultural significance. reception within an artists listener base and how the songs fit into the context of a band or artists image or discography at large. With all these factors combined I put together my list of the 100 best singles I heard in 2020.  100. Waxahatchee - Fire I've been an enjoyer of Waxahatchee's music for years now and in 2020 she added Fire  to the high end of singles in her discography. The song is a vocal wonder that shows off Kati...
