Best New Tracks Of The Week: 2/4/2024

This week was headlined by a major new release in the electronica world. See where it laded among a series of promising indie singles.

5. Point Him Out - That Mexican OT (feat. DaBaby)
I was late coming around to That Mexican OT's big hit Johnny Dang last year but eventually, the song grew on me a lot as I continued to hear it on the charts. So far this year he's shifted away from the faster and more slick flows that made the track so unique into something harder-hitting. I wasn't crazy about it on his first new single but it works better here with an assist from DaBaby who fits right into this style.

4. Sideways - JT
On her second solo single JT continues to experiment with a colder and less expressive demeanor than much of her City Girls music. On Sideways it's even more of an embrace without some of the confident interludes and attention-grabbing jokes involved.  But what results may be an even more focused and impressive display of her talent.

3. The End Of The Contender - Everything Everything
You'd think after all these years of listening to Everything Everything's bizarre indie pop I would be used to the strange first impressions they can so often give off. That was once again the case on this new song and yet it grew on me with nearly every listen including a hook that despite its simplicity has drilled into my head and stayed there.

2. Living Is Easy - Agriculture
Flenser black metal outfit Agriculture is looking to build on a strong 2023 and they're off to a pretty great start. This new single channels some of their most compositionally dynamic black metal contemporaries. They push their sounds into directions that might upset ome purists, but had me on the edge of my seat.

1. Dreamfear - Burial
Burial surprised fans last month with the announcement that he had signed to XL and had new music on the way. Then he surprised fans again by dropping the two new tracks a week earlier than they were was originally announced. Then he surprised fans a third time by embracing some of the stuttering drums and dance rhythms that his music has all but abandoned for so long. Even as somebody who has enjoyed a lot of the recent more ambient Burial music it feels great seeing him get back into his bag as an experimental lo-fi dance maestro.
