Suga EP - Megan Thee Stallion: Review

Image
Megan Thee Stallion is a Texas based rapper who blew up last summer with her "Hot Girl Summer" catchphrase and a series of viral hit singles, all coming from her debut mixtape Fever . After popping up for a number of features and contributing to some movie soundtracks over the last few months she surprised announced a new 9 track 24 EP that followed in line with her first two official releases. Review By Lavender: Megan Thee Stallion mostly won me over last year, while I thought her debut mixtape was solid and nothing to incredible she proved to be fantastically consistent. When she finally teamed up with Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign to turn her marquee phrase into a song it was one of my favorite singles of the year and went even further to establish herself as one of rap music premiere bad bitches. On Suga  she goes even further to prove that she may be unmatched when it comes to crafting sexually charged bangers, but she also shows some lack of versatility on numer...

Changes - Justin Bieber: Review

Image
Justin Bieber is a Canadian mega pop star who first blew up off of some viral singles in the beginning of last decade. Even though it has been five years since his last studio album he has maintained a consistent presence in the news as well as on the charts as he has featured in a number of major hits. This definitely got better on his 3rd proper record Purpose  which at the very least had some defining personality that made the tracks actually sound like Justin Bieber music rather than computer generated pop tunes. But the 5 years since then clearly hasn't helped the problem, as Changes  sounds as devoid of anything defining as any of Bieber's previous works. The singles did not have me excited...

Mirrorland - Earthgang; Review

Image
Earthgang are an Atlanta based hip hop duo comprised of MC's Johnny Venus and Doctur Dot. They released a number of mixtapes in the first half of this decade building up their profile through features and their association with hip hop and R&B supergroup Spillage Village. After signing to J. Cole's Dreamville label they featured a number of times on the labels compilation record earlier this year and spring-boarded that into their major label debut Mirrorland . Review By Lavender: While Earthgang have been on my radar for a while and I've been stopping in to check on their music routinely I made the choice to skip reviewing the records until they dropped something more substantial or popular and ultimately I do wish I had reviewed them. But retrospectively they were mostly the process of a duo finding themselves musically and evolving up to this moment, where they have signed to J. Cole's Dreamville records and got the spotlight on their compilation project...
