Shoegaze Roundup with Julie, Wisp, Ride, Samlrc, & A Place To Bury Strangers: Rapid Fire Reviews

I love shoegaze and that's no secret. So in addition to some of the shoegaze records I've already covered from 2024, I wanted to hone in and catch up with a few I missed.  my anti-aircraft friend  - julie LA-based shoegaze outfit julie didn't start out 2024 as one of my most anticipated new bands. But after a few singles where they seemed to drown themselves even more in vintage shoegaze and noise pop styles that I've long found irresistible, I started to look forward to their debut album my anti-aircraft friend  more and more. While a song like last year's "catalogue" surely helped, it was their best song to date "clairbourne practice" that really sold me on the band. Even as parts of it feel like classic shoegaze worship it's one spoonful of Slowdive and one spoonful of My Bloody Valentine. Splitting that difference perfectly is what brings the band to their most interesting points.  That contrast pops on deep cuts like "tenebrist...

Best New Tracks Of The Week 3/17/24

I am in the thick of Rolling Loud weekend and running on absolute fumes right now.  5.  Monaco  - Ride Is it a bizarrely full circle moment to hear Ride sounding like they're trying to be Amusement Parks On Fire? Yes. But that doesn't prevent me from enjoying the results. While Ride's comeback has never inspired the same critical acclaim as some of their classic shoegaze contemporaries they have managed an impressive consistency in both release schedule and quality that I've grown to appreciate a lot.  Listen 4.  Enough for you  - Wisp Once again shoegaze upstart Wisp has impressed me with a track from her upcoming EP. The formula here is far from unheard of but she's dabbling in sounds heavier than some of her contemporaries. With smashing drums and chugging riffs she's wandering her dreamy poise into Hum territory, an influence many of the other new age shoegaze acts probably won't reach for years. What results is an impressive level of sonic intensity th...

This Is Not A Safe Place - Ride: Review

Image
Ride is a legendary English rock band considered one of the fathers of the Shoegaze genre who released the first of Shoegaze's "Big 3" records with their 1990 debut album Nowhere . Since then the band released a triology of albums in the 90's including one of the most maligned records of their career before breaking up in 1996, and reforming for a comeback album in 2017 alongside both of the other big three shoegaze bands. Review By Lavender: Nowhere , Ride's debut record was a groundbreaking moment for Shoegaze and one of the most consistently underrated records of the 90's given how ahead of their time the band was and how brilliantly the music has held up. I also find myself consistently enjoying the bands music more than many others, their sophomore record Going Blank Again  and their early recordings album Smile  are both records I would highly recommend, and I was pretty high on their 2017 comeback record Weather Diaries . While they released a B-...

Candle Cove Singles Chart: 7/5/19

1. Ride - Repetition The legendary shoegaze band steals a #1 in what may be the weakest week of 2019 so far. On the back of a great lead single Ride is gearing up to drop their second album of the 2010's 2. Rosalia - Millionaria Rosalia continues building up her namesake in 2019 with a split single calling back to the ever growing popularity of latin pop music on the charts. 3. Post Malone Goodbyes  (Feat. Young Thug) Post Malone is back with what will likely be another nondescript chart topper, but thankfully he has brought along Young Thug this time and hopefully Thugger can give a little bit of life to a track we will all grow to hate quickly. 4. Dreamville - Costa Rica  (Feat. Bas, JID, Guapdad 4000, Reese LAFLARE, Jace, Mez, Smokepurpp, Buddy & Ski Mask The Slump God) Sneaking in before the Friday release of ROTD3 is this massive posse cut that features some Dreamville favorites and some of traps brightest young faces. 5. Cupcakke - Ayesha Cupcakke return...
