Rapid Fire Reviews: Loosely Electronica with Forest Swords, Yeule, Eartheater

We're getting to that point in the year where I'm just trying to make every recap count as much as possible. Here are the loose collection of albums I've assembled to cover under the broadest possible umbrella of electronica.  Bolted  - Forest Swords Forest Swords is the kind of musical project you don't easily forget. So even though it's been a full 6 years since the last proper studio album from FS, the distinctive brand of dark electronica with the occasional naturalistic field recording style mixed in still feels both instantly recognizable and artistically engaging. Though the album came out at a busy time for new reviews I still listened to it right away and I've had a lot of time to sit with it. Much of that comes from realizing just how good all of the album's singles really are. Tracks like the records first two songs Munitions  and Butterfly Effect  did win me over when I first heard them but the eerie, textured sonic anguish they both manage to ac...

Best New Tracks Of The Week: September 3rd, 2023

5.  inferno  - yeule I was surprised by how much I liked the previous yeule single and for that reason I wasn't surprised by how much I liked this one. Both tracks feature MAJOR instrumental improvements from the previous yeule album which creates a drastically more interesting sonic palette for the understated vocals and mysterious songwriting.  Explore 4.  I Got Heaven  - Mannequin Pussy Welcome back, Mannequin Pussy. While this new song lacks the earworm hook they often deliver I find it hard to complain about the dreamy blown-out replacement. Especially when it contrasts with some of the most pointed and explosive verses I've ever heard from the band. It's immediate, vicious, and totally unflinching.  Explore 3.  Demons  - Doja Cat If you had told me that Doja Cat's newest song would see her doing her best Baby Keem impression I wouldn't have necessarily been more excited. But do I like the song? Oh yeah. It sacrifices some of the sheer catchi...

Rapid Fire Reviews: Terminally Online Observations

While every album is talked about on the internet these days there is no denying that some get their acclaim from a more grassroots level. This trio of releases come from artists who have fervent defenders online, me included. I wanted to review all of them in full but it's been a busy year so I decided to just quickly cover them here before I'm even more late than I already am. Enjoy <3 Weatherglow EP - Weatherday & Asian Glow I've been excited for pretty much anything Sputnik, AKA Weatherday does under any of their side projects. While a collaborative EP may not be the exact thing fans were highly anticipating post- Come In  I still think it's an opportunity for some really cool music. Asian Glow is another beloved underground noisy lo-fi artist who collaborated with Parannoul last year and is now checking Weatherday off of the internet-core heroes list. Seriously though I was really excited to hear this and it pretty much lived up to my expectations. You'l...
