Animal - LUMP: Review

Image
LUMP is a collaborative project between singer-songwriter Laura Marling and multi-instrumentalist and member of folktronica band Tunng, Mike Lindsay. They debuted with a highly acclaimed EP in 2018, before Laura released one of the most universally loved albums of her career in 2020. This set up for a highly anticipated debut of the LUMP project with Animal . Review By Lav: While I've always been an admirer of Laura's music LUMP included, she reached new heights with last years Song For Our Daughter . The songwriting and performances were so expertly done that the record delivered excellence on one track after another. While Animal  certainly doesn't match that level of consistency, it replaces it with some strikingly unique sound palettes that push the singer-songwriter style in new directions.  The records four singles are a perfect representation of this with an inconsistent but very unique set. Climb Every Wall  was far and away my favorite single coming into the reco...

Song For Our Daughter - Laura Marling: Review

Image
Laura Marling is a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter who spent the last decade releasing a variety of successful folk records often with a distinct sound of experiment. After her previous record Semper Femina  became her biggest success outside of Britain she took the longest break of her career up to this point and returned with Song For Our Daughter .  Review By Lavender: While I have long been a fan of Laura Marling I never considered her to be one of the greatest artists in her very saturated genre. Despite her talent and pretty consistent output I have never totally adored a record of her, until now. Song For Out Daughter  is similarly understated in the way her previous record was but Laura manages to do so much with so little on these tracks both vocally and instrumentally that nearly every second of these short ten tracks is sheer bliss.  The first half of the record is nearly flawless going 4 for 5 with highlights. The opener Alexandra  is a twangy...

Earth - EOB: Review

Image
Ed O'Brien is a British guitarist who is releasing his debut solo album under the EOB name after serving as a member of Radiohead for over 25 years. Earth  was written and recorded over a multi-year period as Ed toured with Radiohead in support of the bands record A Moon Shaped Pool , and the record was worked on by members of Wilco, Portishead and of course Radiohead. Review By Lavender: I, like everyone else on earth absolutely love Radiohead. Coming off A Moon Shaped Pool  in 2016 I had a feeling it would be a while since we heard from the boys again but they have kept us fed in the mean time with solo projects. With both Johnny and Thom releasing film soundtracks, Thom releasing an excellent third studio album and Ed's debut here we have not been strapped for Radiohead side content. While Earth  is a solid debut record by all means it evens out to about an equal number of hits and misses.  The record had four singles and I was split down the middle, so lets handl...
