Best New Tracks Of The Week: 4/9/23

Late again, sorry I was on vacation, take some deep breaths and enjoy. 5.  Weedkiller  - Ashnikko I think Ashnikko might have out-Dorian Electra'd Dorian themselves this week. In what is easily my favorite single from this new Ashnikko era so far they're getting cutthroat and living up to the song's aggressive title. While it's mostly the strong hook that wins me over I also have to say some of the clever vocalizations and stretching of their range as a singer pay off big time.  Listen 4.  Fallin'  - Joey Bada$$ If you had Joey trying his R&B side out on your 2023 bingo card, you're probably well on your way to winning. You'd be in even better shape if you correctly predicted that the results would actually be kind of good. As is often the case with crossovers like these, the hook suffers with singing that is sufficient but needs a bit more to help sell it.  Ultimately, I'm kind of surprised the sound and sentiment of the song are pulled off so well ...

Best New Tracks Of The Week: March 5th, 2023

5.  Worms  - Ashnikko I can see this not going over well since on the surface this song is a pretty severe aesthetic mismatch with lyrics that don't seem to particularly add up to anything and a plucked bassline placed precariously over a rattling trap beat. Once I gave myself into the theme of the song, having brain worms, it's sonic clashes started to click with me a bit more. Whether this will hold up will be put to the test on the album but I see the potential in what Ashnikko is going for here more than on the first single.  Listen 4.  Since I Have A Lover  - 6LACK The decision to switch from darker, moodier R&B to something brighter and even a bit indie flavored was one I didn't understand at first but it did grow on me ever so slightly. Maybe it's just that I'm so excited for 6LACK to be back but some of the things that normally bother me on songs like the weak hook or the track just bowing out completely out of nowhere at the end didn't really dampen...

DEMIDEVIL - Ashnikko: Review

Image
Ashnikko is an up and coming rapper born in North Carolina and based in the UK. She blew up in 2019 off her song STUPID  and a number of other sexually raw and personality filled bangers. After attracting the attention of some other similarly unique artists she geared up to make her full length debut with this 10 track mixtape. Review By Lav: This was one of the trickier reviews I've ever had to piece together, calling my feelings on the album complicated would be an understatement. There is no denying that I love the character of Ashnikko, her hilarious demeanor and unique personality are infectious as a musical persona and has attracted me to her music since I first heard STUPID . Unfortunately from a songwriting and particularly from a lyrical stance Nikko has had her struggles. A couple of the singles leading up to the record predicted this and the result is a fittingly mixed bag of tracks with some awesome highs and embarrassing lows.  The record starts off decent with Da...
