God Does Like Ugly - JID: Review

Image
Review by Lavender: JID is an Atlanta MC who spent the latter half of the 2010s establishing himself as a versatile and endlessly talented MC with a series of memorable mixtapes and features. His rise all culminated in the 2022 album The Forever Story, one of the best rap albums of the entire decade so far. In the 3 years since, JID has risen drastically in popularity due to a bizarre crossover with Imagine Dragons and an unpredictable TikTok hit in the Forever Story deep cut “Surround Sound.” Now he's back with a frequently promised new record, God Does Like Ugly.  The lead single is as good a place as any to start because it affirms the level of talent JID is working with. “WRK” didn't necessarily blow me away, mostly because its beat feels painfully standard and the chorus is very much nothing. But the longer JID goes on in his verses, it feels like he develops more and more to say. So even though the song is far from a highlight, it's a great example of how, even at th...

Alfredo 2 - Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist: Review

Image
Review by Lavender:  Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist are a pair of hip-hop veterans who first collaborated on Alfredo  in 2020. For the album, Freddie largely adapted to Alchemist's production style, delivering lowkey rapping over lush jazz-sampling beats. For that reason, it's never been a personal favorite of mine in Freddie's discography, despite how proficient and consistent the talent of both veterans is. With a lead single that feels like it meanders for far longer than it needs to, I went into this record hoping for the pair to simply operate at the level I was used to. With that expectation in mind, this was just about as good as I could hope for.  That was a complaint-heavy intro, so let me go ahead and get my gripes out of the way. Most of those gripes come in a trilogy of tracks right in the middle of the record. Much like the lead single with its lingering, unnecessary outro, "Empanadas" doesn't really feel like there's enough actual song in ...

Best New Tracks Of The Week: 11/3/2024

Yes LCD Soundsystem are back and yes there was a pretty good chance going into this list they would be at the top spot 99 out of 100 times, see whether it came to fruition.  5.  Punish  - Ethel Cain I still get some dolls unhappy with my review of Ethel Cain's breakthrough Preacher's Daughter  where I pointed out how inclined she is to senselessly waste time with both too many songs and songs that wander on for way too long. With her even longer follow-up, I can already feel similar instincts creeping in but this lead single does have me biting my tongue a bit. Despite definitely being both longer and slower than it needs to, the subtler cracking darkness that the Ethel Cian persona has always been wading through is very much intact and it's clear why she's made a name for herself by doing it so well.  Listen 4.  AAA  - FLO R&B girl group FLO have as much potential as anyone right now and they've been showing it off with great singles for a few yea...

2022 Year End Lists: Top 100 Albums Of 2022

Image
I've said a few times this year that it's been a kind of interesting year for albums. While there wasn't the same pile of records absolutely blowing me away this year that there had been in years past, I was pleasantly surprised by how deep the field was. There were definitely albums cut from this year's list that could have comfortably made it onto one of the last two years' editions. Ultimately, I think that's a good thing. If I had to choose between the two I would take more good albums. But if the praise seems particularly quick compared to other lists and other years, there's a reason. Enjoy <3 ( This list was originally posted on January 1st, 2023 but was remade due to formatting errors) 100. Rina Sawayama - Hold The Girl While Rina failed to impress me with some of the songwriting and in particular the hooks on her new record, the production of Clarence Clarity and her imposing personality are enough to carry this record through with its memorable ...
