Best New Tracks Of The Week: May 7th, 2023
I'm a day late, sorry I was at Shaky Knees. Enjoy <3
5. Four Kinds Of Horses - Peter Gabriel
In the ongoing march of new Peter Gabriel singles each coming with multiple versions this specific track may not stand out the most. Once again it's a little longwinded and Gabriel seems to assume a level of grandiosity for the track that it doesn't really do anything to earn. However, seeing it through proved to be a pretty enjoyable endeavor.
4. Spit - Poppy
Especially in a light week this Poppy cover of the underrated Kittie song was going to stand out. As usual she isn't lacking for energy and the pummeling instrumentation is the perfect backdrop for her screams. Even if it comes off a bit formulaic it's a formula that works.
3. You Are The Beginning - Boris/Uniform
Prolific Japanese rock band Boris is teaming up with industrial act Uniform for a new collab album as you'd know if you've been anywhere near someone listening to this new single because it is LOUD. The classic metal vocals and dense officiously quite jittery instrumental are impossible to ignore. Causing this much chaotic dissonance in under 4 minutes feels like some kind of record.
2. Cops And Robbers - underscores
I'll admit I had a pretty negative reaction to this song at first while blasting it in the car with friends but once I started to pay a bit more attention on relistens I realized how much fun it's having. While it is still a bit too long I appreciate how it manages to tell a clear and compelling story while maintaining its fun pop-punky energy and incredibly catchy hook.
1. New Essence - Clearbody
A Charlotte band topping one of MY weekly track lists?? Unheard of. This time it's a return from Clearbody who have been quiet for a few years now but don't sound like they've missed a beat with this Hum-esque fusion of churning guitars, booming drums and reverb as far as the eye can see. The song doesn't stick around for very long but with how quickly it gets the point across, it doesn't really have to.
