Best New Tracks Of The Week: October 29th, 2023

5. And Still - Peter Gabriel
In total the collection of new material Peter Gabriel has released hasn't exactly been consistently satisfying. But he's managed to shine through a handful of times and this song sounded better and better to me every time. I love the sweeping compositional style and consistently catchy refrains throughout. I still have no idea what to make of his upcoming new album though.

4. Brick By Brick - Conway The Machine & Wun Two
Okay, consider me surprised. My expectations were not high for Conway crossing over with lo-fi hip-hop beats artist Wun Two. What seemed like nothing more than a reason to release new material is actually off to a great start with Conway delivering some of his characteristically hard-hitting lines in appropriately lethal fashion. They pair great with a vintage-sounding instrumental highlighted by fluttering keys.

3. Why? - Matmos
Leave it to Matmos to show up on this list like clockwork every time they drop a new song. This time they earned it with one of the more conventional tracks of this era so far, though that isn't saying much. It's a dizzyingly complex blend of electronic textures and chopped-up vocal samples that is remarkably good at keeping up its sonic energy even though some of its strangest ideas.

2. The Tower - Future Islands
I've sort of become accustomed at this point to Future Islands randomly showing up one week and dropping one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. While this track may not be THAT transcendent it has all the same parts on offer. I like the lyrical content here a lot and they continue to hit dramatic peaks that are immensely satisfying, fans should have no trouble getting into this track.

1. Whispers In The Echo Chamber - Chelsea Wolfe
Even when she isn't at her loudest or most sonically oppressive, Chelsea can still perform with a darker demeanor and more enveloping haze than almost anyone. The stiff drums rattling into space and revved up walls of distortion sound great within the song's cavernous walls of space. Once you reach the final minute where the song erupts with directional guitars and distant background screams it lives up to every bit of its shock and awe.
