Best New Tracks Of The Week: 10/12/24

5. Have Nots - The Underachievers
Welcome back Underachievers. For the record this isn't the first thing they've dropped in ages or anything they had a new single just last month. The point is that I haven't even been doing this segment long enough to have talked about them before and I've been doing it for YEARS. In what sounds like a Griselda song of all things AK and Issa split chilling and calculating verses that remind me of how much I liked them both in the first place.

4. DINORWIC - Bibio
Bibio is back with a sequel to his surprisingly beloved turn for ambient music Phantom Brickworks. This bulky lead single is a perfect introduction to the record delivering a serenity that feels in line with the naturalistic sounds and styles his music has always dabbled in. It's a song that creeps along but never feels eerie or ominous, instead more than welcoming you to engage in the nuance and details of its delicate core.

3. A Fragile Thing - The Cure
The second single from The Cure's highly anticipated new album hits a little different note than the first, which went for something more epic in scope but floundered in its opening run. Fragile gets right to it and while the highs may not be as triumphant the more straightforward presentation of the song works. The hook may not set the world on fire but it's smooth and catchy in a way that's easy to appreciate.

2. Bardo - Trauma Ray
I've been hearing about Trauma Ray's heavier, Hum-inspired brand of shoegaze for a few years now and occasionally tapped in. This song may the best thing they've done yet with this crunchy guitar lead and the kind of thunderous epic performances that make the heavier side of shoegaze click. The verses are strong but ultimately it's the chorus that really sold me on both the song and the prospect of the band as a whole.

1. Ingo Swann - Flying Lotus
While I liked the first FlyLo single to drop a few weeks ago this one feels much more in line with the kind of great work I always expect him to deliver when he drops a new song. It's a vibrant and wonky piece of psychedelic electronica with stiff drum hits and an irresistible groove. Like so many great FlyLo tracks before it the song manages to be incredibly catchy and infectious even without any vocal refrains, I don't see this track leaving the rotation any time soon.
