Best New Tracks Of The Week: 8/25/24

After a few impressive weeks in a row, this one is just okay.

5. booboo - Yaeji
Even though I wasn't completely in love with Yaeji's debut album last year I still think she has immense high-end potential so any time she drops a new song it's an event. That seemed to be the case even more with this love letter to the dancefloor that dropped in the wake of a viral Boiler Room set. The song is admittedly pretty cute and has a charm to it but I can't say it's clicked with me quite as strong as some others beyond an impressively versatile instrumental.

4. very little effort - Julie
Foregoing the many dozens of puns I could make surrounding the name of this song, I'll just say that Julie is an LA shoegaze band worth keeping your eyes on. Their debut album is dropping later this year and this is the most distinctive they've sounded yet with a pair of vocalists sliding perfectly into the moody demeanor of their fuzzed out haze.

3. any means - Balance And Composure
This is another new single from Balance and Composure that didn't win me away immediately but I liked it more and more with each listen. Part of the issue is that it doesn't have the strongest start in the world as the verses sort of drag. But once it starts to elevate in the direction of a pretty great hook everything really comes together nicely.

2. Holy, Holy - Geordie Greep
News of the Black Midi breakup may have hit the rate your music community like an atom bomb, but frontman Geordie Greep had a debut solo single in the chamber for those clambering fans. The song still sounds firmly in the universe of Black Midi, though with a hefty spoonful of theatricality that hasn't quite been allowed to shine before. Though that lens the song sounds like a full-on one-man show that is silly at points, harrowing at others, and deeply compelling throughout.

1. Hell 99 - Foxing
Oh yeah, Foxing are back. After a triumphant, multi-faceted lead single that emerged in the wake of their announcement of an upcoming independently released new album, they're back with another hit. Hell 99 is a full-on screamo rager. It's punchy and pummeling without sacrificing a boatload of catchy hooks and moments where a shimmering sincerity shines through. They're off to a fantastic start with a strong two for two.
