Best New Tracks Of The Week: July 28th. 2024

Another ironically long shortlist for the best new tracks of the week this week, but narrowing it down didn't turn out to be all that tricky.

5. Scarface - BABii

On BABii's second single with Iglooghost and co on board, the princess of electronica delivers on her promise of hard-hitting glitchy beats with sugary singing. It's a combination that won't be a reset for anyone's expectations of what BABii is capable of but a song whose refrains and grinding dance beat are steps ahead of most of her contemporaries.

4. Superstar - Hinds

I haven't been crazy about the pop-punky indie rock of Hinds in a while but this track reminds me of why their effortless fun and bottomless wit clicked with me in the first place. It's an attitude-soaked takedown of a local superstar with all the details and snark you'd hope for but the band manages to wrap it up into a catchy and concise package for their best single in years.

3. I'VE BEEN EVIL - SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE

I've been hoping that the next SotB record is as good as the EP that they dropped last year and it's off to a pretty strong start. This track leans into their janglier and dreamier indie side but with a fittingly dark core underneath that murmurs throughout the track. The way it lands in this ominous circular bridge across the final minute is impressively mesmerizing and they do a lot with a relatively short runtime.

2. Nobody's  - Touche Amore

Touche Amore's previous album Lament has grown on me a LOT in the years since I first reviewed it which made me pretty excited about a follow-up. While this lead single may be shorter and more melodic than I anticipated that irresistible post-hardcore flare is still absolutely intact. While the song does feel like it's over before it even really gets the chance to start, that hasn't stopped me from falling for what it does have to offer.

1. Berlin Nightmare - SOPHIE

Come on, this one had me from the opening notes. My love of Sophie is no secret and this song has existed in snippet capacity from a 2019 performance but hearing it in full sonic fidelity is an entirely new experience. With absolutely crushing synths and staggering drum hits it's a completely irresistible core right out of the gate and the sparse, robotic German vocals are a perfect touch for such a murky and grinding instrumental. Berlin Nightmare really is the absolute perfect name for this song.
