Best New Tracks Of The Week: 6/9/24

One of the busiest weeks of the year for new singles resulted in a hotly contested top 5 where I had to make some hard cuts. Here's what soared to the top.

5. Del Oro - Floating Potins
Del Oro builds on the already exciting promise of a strong single Floating Points dropped last year. Once again its the combination of irresistible house drums that keep me moving from start to finish and the progressing dance synths fluttering in every which direction over top of them. The album serves up one breakdown after another eventually leading to its last and final moment sparking the spectacular final minute of the song.

4. Purple Gas - Zach Bryan
Zach Bryan seemingly just can't miss right now and this song is even more proof. Just a few weeks after dropping one of the best country singles of the year he's back with a breezy, chemistry-filled duet. He continues to master his ability to pull from vintage folk and country styles and presentation but make them feel inventive and interesting through his songwriting and performances. Shoutout to Noeline Hofmann for a great assist on this one.

3. Genesis - Raye
Raye continues to dazzle with her artistry and expand her horizons into unexpected places. This new single is an absolutely grand 7-minute undertaking sweeping through incredibly distinct stylistic passages. It's all connected through these musings on Raye's own youth and whether her lifestyle is causing her to miss some of the most valuable moments of her life. It's shockingly vulnerable and grounded giving the expansive sound palette and composition.

2. Vintage - Moses Sumney
Moses Sumney has been too busy being one of the most versatile talents alive to focus much on music recently but he's finally returned and what he's back with is both familiar but subtly new. The song is still lowkey playing off both the compelling intimacy of his voice and the gentle instrumentation backing it. The song soars into a pretty irresistible bright chorus backed by gorgeous choir vocals and it all sounds better and better every time.

1. Petco - Cassandra Jenkins
Cassandra Jenkins is the gift that keeps on giving. After loving her first two singles from this new album cycle I honestly think this might be the best one yet. it's an indie rock rager vividly detailing the aimless haze of wandering dissociatively through the pet store with one of the funniest music videos I've seen all year. The song's fake-out eruption onto the hook is a stroke of pure genius, I absolutely love this song.
