Best New Tracks Of The Week: 6/23/24

This week some big favorites dropped duds and the best songs came from a few surprising places.

5. Life - Jamie xx (feat. Robyn)
Even lacking the variety of his legendary debut album, the singles from Jamie xx's long-awaited follow-up have still been satisfying. Life sees him teaming up with Robyn, who appears to be fully back in 2024, for what may be the most satisfying of the bunch. Jamie's vibrant house beats combine with Robyn's unmistakable direct swagger for a crossover that meets the moment perfectly.

4. TGIF - GloRilla
Glo isn't slowing down off the release of her admittedly pretty solid mixtape earlier this year. Her voice continues to be one of the most commanding in all of rap and the sparse popping beats she chooses to lend it to make things hit even harder. Even if this track has one or two lyrical moments that tend to drag down the energy with silly punchlines it's still an absolutely thumping song.

3. Favourite - Fontaines D.C.
Over the years I've made it abundantly clear that I've never been a Fontaines D.C. fan and yet they occasionally emerge with something truly great. That's the case with their new single, which drastically improves upon a fan-favorite that I couldn't stand earlier this year. The song sees the band dialing back into a cloudier haze of blissful noise and gearing up their sentimental side across one of the catchiest choruses of their entire career.

2. Phoneglow - Burial
Burial being great is absolutely nothing new and if you didn't see it coming you really only have yourself to blame. After jumping labels to XL earlier this year and dropping the excellent Dreamfear he's back again with Phoneglow a similarly epic progressive dance cut. This time around he seeks to rise out of the lo-fi ashes with some of the most crisp sounds and punchy drums to pop up on a Burial song in years and as it journeys from sound to sound and style to style it's an absolute delight.

1. Vertigo - Beach Bunny
This may be the best Beach Bunny song I've ever heard. Though they still have to cite Paramore as an overwhelming influence they've been dropping better material than Hayley Williams and company for z long time now. Vertigo is a short and incredibly direct "bop about self-sabotage" that lives up to both promises. It's purely irresistible pop punk.
