Best New Tracks Of The Week: 5/19/24

What a great week for new singles, let's get into it.

5. New World - Tindersticks
According to Tindersticks themselves, this is a shift into a more poppier and accessible direction. Given this less-than-4-minute edit from the band is still a distinctly composed swaying chamber ballad it's not like they're exactly making an Imagine Dragons song or anything. But I see what they're going for and despite a slow start I appreciate where the song eventually ends up.

4. Joker - Porches
Porches got my attention earlier this year with the great single Rag which is probably why I was so open to this deeply strange follow-up. This weird indie-slacked jam that seems to meander through weird lyrics about getting a dog and kissing him on the mouth. I know it may not exactly sound enticing but there's something so effortlessly smooth about the songs rambling demeanor that I find pretty captivating.

3. Oh No! - The Decemberists
This is the best new single Decemberists have dropped this year, comfortably. Of course the band leaning into some of their most worldly and instrumentally verbose instrumentation led to the richest sound palette I've heard on one of their songs in ages. But also the lyrics, which tumble on alongside the song in hilarious troublesome chaos, work to heighten the experience significantly.

2. Feast Of Tongues - Los Campesinos!
Okay color me surprised about this one. Los Campesinos! does have plenty of great tracks in their back catalog but it's been awhile since they released music I really loved, or honestly since they last released music at all. But this song grabbed me right away and didn't let go with the triumphant backing vocals and harmonies behind a driving instrumental. It feels like such a blissful and youthful eruption of emotion that I just can't resist.

1. Delphinium Blue - Cassandra Jenkins
This week Cassandra Jenkins posted a casting call to Instagram asking people to show up for a music video shoot in fursuits and frankly I can't fucking wait to see what comes of it. That's in addition to dropping this delightful new single which perfectly matches her flawless balance of gentle, slow pacing that sets up for swelling dramatic moments.
