Best New Tracks Of The Week: April 28th, 2024

5. New Species - Iglooghost
Earlier this year Iglooghost released a song that I didn't exactly see the appeal of. In a sense, I can kind of identify a similar issue with this frenetic banger if I think about it for too long. But I consider thinking about this for too long to be a cardinal sin. The song is a high-tempo pummeling of wiry electronic that was always happy to hear in the moment.

4. Like I Say (I runaway) - Nilufer Yanya
It must just be a heavy week. Nilufer's album indulges with sound in a way many singer-songwriters don't want to and she managed to do it without getting the way of her poetry. Now the sounds are even louder and even at moments when it feels emotionally overpowering, it's magnetically aligned. She continues to sound not only unique, but vibrant.

3. Mirage - Gel
Last year Gel used subtle interpolations of different genres and styles to add meaningful flavor to their brand of hardcore. The debut album that resulted impressed me and they don't seem to intend on slowing down any time soon. This ripping new single occupies nearly a full 3 minutes, something unheard of on their debut, but they have every bit of the energy they need to ride it out.

2. Suffocate - Knocked Loose (feat. Poppy)
Another Knocked Loose single and another hard-hitting. This one is a combination with Poppy who is further establishing her hardcore cred one baby step at a time. This song erupts at the right moments and carries with it a fury that walks a perfect line right down the middle of the two artists. Having not been a die-hard Knocked Loose fan for a while now, their new album is continuing to look more and more appealing.

1. Frog In Boiling Water - DIIV
DIIV continue to churn away one strong shoegaze single after another even as they exist very much within the sound and form you might expect from them at this point. The title track from their new album may lack the urgency of a song like Blankenship but it sounds exactly as much like a brooding hazy dream. Throw in some catchy refrains and you've got yet another strong single from the band.
