Best New Tracks Of The Week: 3/3/24

Late drop again because I'm just getting back from vacation but hey at least it's coming out today.

5. Von Dutch - Charli XCX
Aspiring hyperpop DJs got the best news of the year when Charli XCX announced that her upcoming project would be a club record. We got the first taste of that with von dutch and, yep, it's certainly a club record. Okay there are plenty of things I like about the song like the revving squeaky synths and Charli's always unflinching confidence. But the beat and refrains just start to feel like nothing aa the song goes on. It doesn't have the actual high impact that I was hoping for from a lead single, If the refrains start to click with me more going forward the song will work a LOT better.

4. Running Through The Campus - Cloud Nothings
I've always had a soft spot for this band even as they seem to get less and less hype each year. This song continues their shift into a pop flavor though it arguably dials some of that back compared to the last Cloud Nothings album. Combine that with some moderately punchy instrumentation and a hook that stuck with me and you've got a solid single from the band.

3. Too Good To Be True - Kacey Musgraves
I had a roller coaster with this song. While I still think it's slightly understated instrumentally just like its predecessor I mainly just needed the songwriting to click with me. And the more  I listened to the track the more impressed I was just how much she manages to spin this relatively common theme of something being to great you hope it isn't a dream into delightful songwritery details. It also pays off well on a hook that didn't really reveal itself to me until a few listens, definitely an improvement over the lead single.

2. Evening Mood - Julia Holter
If not for one of the best songs of the year so far Julia Holter would once again top the singles list because she's basically a cheat code at this point. With each new release, she wanders her shimmering but reserved sonic ambitions into increasingly fascinating musical territory. This song is no different, sounding like a mystical whirlwind in an entirely different way than much of her material already does. Another new Julia song and another home run.

1. Broken Man - St. Vincent
Okay St, Vincent is basically a lead single machine and this absolutely stands with the best of them. What an absolute rager full of flick vocal layering fiery guitar leads and irresistible swagger seeping out of her snarling singing. Even in a world with already high expectations for St. Vincent, this is an absolute JAM that goes above and beyond. Her new album instantly became one of my most anticipated of the year.
