Best New Tracks Of The Week: 1/28/24

Getting back into a normal routine for 2024 this week we're actually going to look back at the best new songs released this week again. Though there were some high-profile drops, it's a surprising array of best tracks that result.

5. Instincts - Erick The Architect (feat. WESTSIDE BOOGIE)
While I think I may prefer the previous Erick single more than this one I've always had a soft spot for when he strips things back to tell it like it is. There's one lyrical highlight after another on this song and I love how uncompromising he manages to keep the subject matter while curating such a gentle and touching vibe on the song.

4. See you soon - Wisp
Wisp is an artist I've been hearing ABOUT a lot more recently than actually hearing from. That was sorted out quickly by this murmuring hazy shoegaze jam. From the eerie girlish vocals that seem like a midpoint between Nicole Dollanganger and Vyva Melinkolya to a bridge that manages to conjure a surprising amount of muscle, I'm enjoying pretty much everything about this song.

3. Fugue (Bin Song) - Squid
This track was apparently left off the second Squid album and I can kind of see why. It sounds a LOT more like their first record in 2021. Thankfully, I still love that album and I love hearing them return to that circular jammy instrumentation and classic punk-inspired vocals. The performances on this song are ripping and fantastic and it builds and builds to satisfying moments throughout.

2. Generator - Justice
MUCH discussion was made online of Justice returning after an extended absence and teaming up with Tame Impala for a new single. Honestly, I think that song is pretty solid and it would have definitely made my best tracks list if it's B-side hadn't been an absolutely spectacular, grinding, intense banger of a dance cut the likes of which I wasn't sure the band even still had in them. Combined both cuts make me incredibly excited for the new Justice album later this year.

1. HISS - Megan Thee Stallion
What else could it be? We probably won't care as much about this song in 12 months but right now Megan Thee Stallion runs the world. After a year of taking petty shots from other rappers and idiots online trying to somehow make her the bad guy in a situation where she was shot, she snapped. And that snapping manifested in her hardest-hitting clapback yet. Across a few minutes, she dials up her intensity to a previously unmatched level and crushes every single obstacle in her path. There hasn't been a beef THIS bitter and THIS viral since Pusha T and Drake, and Megan Thee Stallion absolutely owned her competition.
