Best New Tracks Of The Week: June 4th, 2023

5. Sodom & Gomorrah - Dorian Electra

Dorian is one of the artists I flip back and forth on the most and following the recent "Sodomy" merch drop I was particularly skeptical that this might be just as phoned in. Turns out this track is actually kind of a banger which sees Dorian cleverly conjuring and satirizing the religious imagery over a ripping beat. As is so often the case I think Dorian has been inconsistent as of late, but this is a highlight.

4. Skeleton Is Walking - Blake Mills

After producing so much good music for other artists in the past few years Blake Mills is back with a new solo project led off by a wonderful lead single which blends together the sounds of classic folk with a biting electric guitar solo. It's nearly six minutes of song that absolutely breezes by with both thematic and textural detail in nearly every moment along the way.

3. Popular - The Weeknd, Madonna & Playboi Carti

Is The Idol probably going to be a disaster, yes, but this song isn't. Aside from fans being disappointed that Carti isn't more present throughout this song kind of checks all the boxes you could hope for. The bouncy instrumental sports a whole new kind of fusion between new and old for The Weeknd and his slick verses give the song a ton of hit potential. Carti and Madonna's additions really only bring out the song's glamorous side even more.

2. A Cloud Broke Open - The Body

Prolific extreme metal band The Body are back quickly as usual. This time they've dropped the lead single and forthcoming album confirmation for an album produced by famed ambient outfit The Haxan Cloak and the first taste is a delectable one. This track features blistering distorted screams that will sound familiar to fans of the band but where it really shines is through the uncompromising percussion blasts and fuzzy synthetic beats. It's unexpected, but in the best way.

1. The Hillbillies - Baby Keem & Kendrick Lamar

Even though this song hasn't made its way to streaming services yet, it's too good to ignore. Once again Kendrick and Keem team up for a uniquely hilarious and charming hip-hop banger that only they could make. Their chemistry is unmatched and by bringing out the most fun elements of each-others sounds they journey to one effortlessly fun place after another.
