5. TUYA - Rosalia

Even though this is a lane that feels extremely familiar for Rosalia, it's still worth remembering how far ahead of her peers she is in the first place. Her stylistic blend and unmistakable vocals certainly make for a distinct combo and while this isn't necessarily the most stunning display of either, even a decent Rosalia is shades above anyone else.

4. I Inside The Old I Dying - PJ Harvey

PJ Harvey at her eeriest is no joke. Between the subtle touches of vocal distortion and what sounds like whispers and chimes distantly occupying the messy mix this is an unsettling listen in all the right ways. I was consistently surprised by how captivated the song's mystique was despite how simple it appears on the surface.

3. Moonless - Julie Byrne

Call it 3/3 on singles so far from the highly anticipated return for one of the gentlest singer-songwriters in the game. Like many of her songs this one doesn't seek to blow listeners away at the drop but with every patient note as the song goes on her voice begins to carry more and more impact. Each new Julie Byrne song just gets better the more you hear it and I can't see this one being any diferent.

2. Out Of Time - Slayyyter

A lesser hot girl than I might be inclined to over-intellectualize the niche that Slayyyter occupies at the crossroads of conventional pop both new and old with hyperpop and electronica. While all of that is true it's unnecessary for two key reasons. She is mother, and this song is a bop. The vintage dance groove suits a more reserved approach on the vocal side quite well and the song has burrowed itself in my head since I first heard it.

1. Obvious - The Drums

The Drums do it again. One of my most anticipated albums of the year gets another massive boost from what might be the best song I've heard from them so far this year. Johnny Pierce's turn as the glittering sun-kissed soft-boy god of surfy indie pop has resulted in some of the most ridiculous earworms I've ever heard and this is no different. From the jangly drums and riffs which bounce back and forth off of each other to the wonderful soaring hook this track is just textbook excellent.
