Best New Tracks Of The Week: May 28th, 2023

5. Justify Your Life - George Clanton
Even though the issue I've always had with George's music, namely the songwriting, is still an issue on this song it might be one of my favorites he's made so far. I just can't deny the track's sunny, fuzzy disposition and rich assembly of instrumentation. Even if moments on the hook hit like a thud they quickly get blended into the gorgeous haze presented throughout the song.

4. Time Ain't Accidental - Jess Williamson
This upcoming Jess Williamson album is quickly becoming one of my most anticipated of the year following last year's Plains and one great single after another. This one isn't quite as instantaneous as the others but with each new subtle piece of instrumentation introduced accompanied by a string of memorable lyrics, it certainly worked its magic on me quickly.

3. LIKED U BETTER - Jeff Rosenstock
The DIY king is back in action with a song that quickly ditches its acoustic demeanor to transition into a bouncy, shouty anthem of exhaustion with someone. It has a catchy universality that hits right away and sticks as the song jangles through three minutes of righteous fun.

2. Space Orphans - Ichiko Aoba
One of the queens of folk music is back with another paralyzingly beautiful outing. If you're familiar with Ichiko's music already she isn't going to do anything here that will completely rewire your brain but she continues to deploy gentle flourishes both instrumentally and vocally that make all the difference. The result is a tragic, touching experience.

1. Prophecy Of The Dragon - The Voidz
The Voidz have always been a very underrated side project of The Strokes' frontman Julian Casablancas. Part of the reason for that is just how remarkably strange their music has always been and this is no different. From Julian's surreal and seemingly meaningless lyrics throughout to the churning metal riffs transitioning out of stiff synthetic beats, the music is resistant to intellectualization. It just jams.
