Best New Tracks Of The Week: March 26th, 2023

5. WE GOT THE JAZZ - Moor Mother
While Moor Mother's songs still don't necessarily work as the best singles in the world, this first taste of her upcoming deluxe version of last year's great Jazz Codes proves that the well of creativity ran even deeper than I thought. It's once again an indulgent but extremely impressive performance clearly surrounded by talented musicianship on all sides.

4. Paradise Is Mine - Swans
Even having never been the biggest Swans fan in the world I can certainly find plenty to like about this song. I love the combination of some hellish sounds that are placed sparsely enough to not completely overtake the song. I appreciate the methodical repetition which sort of heightens the song's energy and even if it once again feels like it's on the more indulgent side than I would have personally made, it's kind of the band's style at this point.

3. TV In The Gas Pump - Wednesday
The 4th single from this upcoming Wednesday album might be my favorite yet despite the overall simplicity of both its presentation and structure. It provides plenty to chew on both through the compelling lyrical imagery and also the instantly charming arrangement of twinkling indie-folk instrumentation that all works to grab me right away and hold on for its brief two minutes.

2. Fly Girl - Flo (feat. Missy Elliott)
FLO's continues appreciation for the girl group era of R&B has been one of my favorite revelations of the past few years and they made for a perfect team-up with one of the actual legends of the time in Missy. The song has a distinctive vintage flair without ever drowning in the nostalgia and the group continues to support each other both through individual verses and wonderful group hooks.

1. I'm That Bitch - BIA & Timbaland
BIA is the first of what I assume will be a number of rappers to go away for a while and come back sounding like Ice Spice. The difference is we know BIA has the clout and intensity as a performer to actually pull it off after years of hard-hitting bad bitch anthems. This is yet another one with a wonderfully assembled beat that grabs a familiar sample or two and gives BIA a perfect structure to go off over. This may not exactly have the pop hook that will give BIA her long-awaited breakthrough, but it's for the girls anyway and I'm sure she's comfortable keeping it that way.
