Best New Songs Of The Week: November 6th, 2022

It really does feel like we're starting to reach that point in the year where releases dry up, almost to the point that this weekly segment takes a hiatus while I work on my year-end stuff. Not quite, but almost.

5. Ahimsa - The Antlers
Technically letting something I wouldn't normally slip into the singles list go this week because it's honestly the only way I'm gonna fill this thing out. this is an Antlers remake of a Peter Silberman solo song that came out a few years ago and while I don't find it to be a particularly life-changing update I do think it hits at the slow development and pacing that have always made The Antlers such a compelling music project at their peak.

4. God Is A Circle - Yves Tumor
There have been many a busy week that a decent Yves Tumor song slipped through the cracks but in one of the weakest release weekends of the entire year for singles allow this to be the beneficiary. This dark rumbling single features some characteristics that everyone should be accustomed to from Yves, but that doesn't make it any less of an entrancing experience.

3. MONK - Alice Longyu Gao
This curious but pretty enjoyable single from ALG starts off with a sort of mental health update though it's done in a characteristically direct way that I really enjoy. It makes the resulting hardcore breakdown and chaotic, self-referential song feel even bouncier and more irresistible than it would have otherwise. The one thing you can't do with this era of ALG's career is ignore it.

2. Baby Queen - Gorillaz
Gorillaz combination of soaring cheap synthesizer sounds and sweet vocal harmonies is fully back on this new single, the first from their upcoming album that doesn't include any featured artists. Damon then takes it back to basics on a song that I think could use a bit more catchy refrains but certainly manages to pull off a dreamy demeanor.

1. BIG PUSSY - Brockhampton
There were a lot of questions from fans about what this upcoming Brockhampton project might sound like given that it's been promised as the band's final and that they haven't really been operating as a unit at least not officially for months now. Turns out they obviously didn't forget how to make a banger and this Kevin Abstract-led lead single is a pretty good example. While it's far from revolutionary that familiarity is honestly what should bring fans to it in the first place.
