Best New Songs Of The Week: November 20th, 2021

5. Tenkiller - Chat Pile
The breakout year for Chat Pile continues as they dropped the soundtrack for a film they scored a few years ago, lead off with this double single that contains more insanity from the band whose insanity is already a little difficult to describe. Whatever you think you're getting into with the heavy but well-paced post-hardcore instrumental, you aren't ready for the lyrics on this track. Well, maybe if you heard their full album earlier this year that can take a bit of the edge off.

4. Nights In December - Tkay Maidza
So I didn't see this coming. It's an R&B flavored track sure but with a beat that combines some warbled synths with clacky background percussion that feels straight out of Tierra Whack's terminally underrated Peppers and Onions. The icing on the cake is a repetitive but effortlessly smooth hook that is pretty much guaranteed to stick in your head.

3. Fingers Of Steel - Shame
While I'll admit that at first, the group shouted chorus on this song did sort of turn me off at first and I was already thinking about how I was gonna phrase the comparisons to Iceage in my review, the song definitely has more going for it than it lets on at first. Much like many of the songs from their sophomore album there is an instant wave of rock intensity that also hides a pretty compelling murkiness underneath and it's that haze that's grown on me.

2. Buffy - Jenny Hval
A new Jenny Hval song inspired by Buffy The Vampire Slayer, sure. Actually more like hell yes because this idea lived up to every expectation I had of it from the somber gentle opening to the perfect introduction of drums and chimes that transitions the song into its core refrains. Jenny's continued dazzling is nothing short of wonderful.

1. On The Run - Kelela
As Kelela continues to dazzle with single after single her new album is becoming one of my most anticipated of early 2022. This is a much more standard R&B affair with moody bass and a sensual layered vocal performance but she brings all the wonderful poise to it that she does all of her songs. Not only is the consistency she's bringing impressive but the variety is as well.
