Best New Songs Of The Week: October 30th, 2022

Last best new songs of October, here's hoping my year-end lists will come out on time.

5. I Killed Captain Hook - Unknown Mortal Orchestra
I had a pretty negative reaction to this when I heard it for the first time as it very purposefully sounds like a demo but it seems like it's genuinely the next single of this UMO era. While it's nowhere near as good as last year's That Life the presentation did grow on me, particularly after really digging into the song's instrumental bridge where every little nuance of guitar sound is put up front and center behind the thin crackling distortion.

4. Feedback - La Roux (Feat. Baby Tate)
Yeah, I'm just as surprised as you are. La Roux is back and her new single is an R&B banger with a Baby Tate verse that honestly kinda rules. That sentence feels randomly generated. There certainly isn't any new territory broken on the song but I am genuinely shocked at how comfortable La Roux sounds on it. This is a song you'll wanna hear first for the shock effect and again because it's stuck in your head.

3. No Ice - Erick The Architect (Feat. AKTHESAVIOR)
The continued critical apathy toward Erick's excellent solo career is really starting to confuse me. After dropping an extremely solid EP last year with one of the best and smartest rap songs of 2022 he's been pretty consistent again in 2022. This team-up with one-half of The Underachievers, AKTHESAVIOR, is a lyrically sharp and totally infectious song with a banger beat and a catchy hook. Just good all around.

2. EUPHORIA -  Jimmy Edgar (Feat. LIZ)
Another week and another great single from what is quickly becoming one of my most anticipated upcoming albums. This time rather than an incomprehensible futuristic banger it's more of a harrowing ballad of lust but built around the same wild sonic textures and sounds we're used to hearing from Jimmy.

1. Shirt - SZA
There are some issues I have with this song mostly coming with the simplicity of the beat which makes it feel all the more like a track SZA wanted to just get out there since it's a popular leak, and then the hook hits. All the gripes I have with the song disappear and are replaced with a series of refrains that I'll be singing for the rest of the year and then some. It isn't the best SZA single ever, but it's a damn good one.
