Best New Songs Of The Week: September, 4th, 2022

FIIIIIIIINALLY. After two weeks of absolute snoozing on the singles chart we are finally back to a week that has it all. Big new releases from huge artists that actually live up to the hype, continued quality music from some of the best acts around and even a few surprises working their way into the mix.

Enjoy <3

5. Too Much - Freddie Gibbs (Feat. Moneybagg Yo)

Sometimes simplicity is all it takes. The hook of this song is a perfect example because it manages to spin some absolute bliss out of a short sequence of refrains. While I wish there was a bit more to separate the verses from the hook I have to say this song goes hard in all the same ways one could hope a Freddie Gibbs track would.

4. New Gold - Gorillaz (Feat. Tame Impala & Bootie Brown)

Even though this high-profile collaboration doesn't quite live up to the hype throughout I will say that it gets off to an excellent start that is more than enough to land a spot on the list. Gorillaz trademark synth tones sound great alongside the fuzzed out psychedelia of Kevin's vocals and the hook despite it's brevity is quite sticky.

3. Genesis - Benjamin Clementine

Anything sounds more eerie and dramatic coming through Benjamin Clementine's instantly recognizable vocals and that's as true as every on this dark instrumentally diverse tune. To say it sounds like wandering through the hall of mirrors in a haunted circus is not an understatement and I still just can't get over the ecstasy of having Ben back and making music once again.

2. There'd Better Be A Mirrorball - Arctic Monkeys

The Arctic Monkeys are back after what feels like a lifetime without them but at least as songwriting is concerned it's like they never even left. The bouncy and incredibly smooth lounge music of their last album shows up here with vintage synths sounds and Alex Turner's trademark croon intact. While it's a bold choice for a lead single given its reserved style it won me over immediately and is likely to do that same for any Tranquility Base fans.

1. I'm In Love With You - The 1975

Two things can be true simultaneously, for example. Firstly, this new 1975 single is VERY similar to the best song from their last record If You're Too Shy. Secondly, I still absolutely love it. With three singles under their belt, it really feels like we're getting the versatile tour de force of an album that the band promised with Notes but assembled with the care of their punchy debut or artsy third album. If it all comes together perfectly the band could be well on their way to a third classic.
