Best New Songs Of The Week: September 18th, 2022

I'm late, sorry. No more wasted time.

5. Talking To Yourself - Carly Rae Jepsen
While this may be the least spectacular of Carly's new singles this year it's still quite a solid song with an exciting climax that lends credit to just how infectious of a song crafter she is. While the short runtime and verses that don't really take the song anywhere can be issues, ultimately the song has the fundamentals of what a good Carly song needs.

4. Washed Away - Kelela
It's good to have Kelela back. While her progressive and futuristic style of R&B has always been closer to maximalizing than distancing, this new song plays it straight with very promising results. Kelela's perfectly powerful yet perfectly intimate singing vocals fit excellently over this creeping instrumental which makes for a song that just has me in its clutches and refuses to let go.

3. Ovule - Bjork
Two weeks and two new Bjork singles, what have we done to be so blessed. While this one takes a more generally reserved approach than its predecessor it still has both refrains and moments of high-impact instrumentation that steal the show. In fact, it's the whole combo of punchy electronic beats with Bjork's unconventional melodies that once again makes me love the song, proving that this well is nowhere near drying up for her.

2. Coyotes - Bill Callahan
If you know Bill Callahan than you really do already know what you're getting into with this, but that makes it even more impressive that he's managed to continue to excite throughout. There's a very texturally rich 70's style combination of glittery key phrases with lackadaisical guitar wandering that just lulls me in right away. While returning to the "coyote" motif in between refrains declaring himself a lover man isn't the most impressive piece of songwriting I've ever heard, the surrounding sonic palette does the work itself.

1. It's Not Just Me, It's Everybody - Weyes Blood
Weyes Blood gave herself big shoes to fill with her last record Titanic Rising but with former Foxygen wiz Jonathan Rado back around for production again they are well on their way to creating another beautiful collection of songs. This kick off ballad is full of absolutely irresistible string passages and an instrumental that continues to build despite never really needing to get all that loud or sonically oppressive.
