Best New Songs Of The Week: August 21st, 2022

Every once in a while there is just a week like this. Not only were there very few high profile singles dropping this week but even some of the few that did failed to live up to the hype. So here is probably the lamest rendition of this list in 2022 so far.

5. Shake The Feeling - Iceage
It's such a slow week that a single from a B-Sides & Demos collection has cracked the list. But to give the band credit Iceage has been one of the most consistently great modern post-punk bands around and I'm not the least bit surprised they have plenty of great material just lying around. The raw and bouncy taste of the compilation is certainly good enough to warrant having been slipped into the tracklist of either of the bands two most recent records.

4. Mania - Daphni
Another consistency of 2022 has been Daphni singles being just alright. While I don't think there's been a true flop in the bunch I also think none of the tracks, including this one, have stood out as great moments in music this year. Regardless Dan Snaith's ear for compelling sonic texture shines through enough to elevate this over more innocuous and faceless house music.

3. LUCID DREAMER - The Comet Is Coming
In a year that has already been big for a few individual members of The Comet Is Coming they are back with a new single that doesn't necessarily break any new ground for the jazz group but does show exactly why their blend of technical skill and genre ambition have made for such an eclectic combo in the past.

2. T.F.J - Kai Whiston
Gloo artist Kai Whiston is still one of the most underrated performers within the experimental electronic scene and the new two part "hard dance symphony" is all the proof you need. The sweeping and compositionally dynamic track starts with a distinctly 90's flare that is slowly but surely cut through by the vibrant distorted sounds of the modern scene. By the time it takes over the song completely I am all in.

1. new strategies for telemarketing through precognitive dreams - teen suicide
Even in a down week teen suicide has shown up and delivered yet another good single in a parade of wonderful tracks coming from Sam Ray this year. This shoegaze-flavored track once again manages to sound great while also standing apart from the numerous other singles. Sneakily with one good song after another teen suicide's new album has become one of my most anticipated of the year.
