Best New Songs Of The Week: August 14th, 2022

One day late, sorry. Lav's quest for stable wi-fi is still an ongoing one and there were so many good songs it was hard to put it all together.

HM. Easy On Your Own? - Alvvays
Normally I wouldn't include an honorable mention on a list like this but I just couldn't leave Alvvays out. The bands turn into a far heavier and more shoegaze-inspired sound is a worthwhile one that I've now enjoyed for back to back tracks.

5. Saturdays - Broken Bells
Broken Collective? Animal Bells? The year of highlights for Animal Collective manifests itself in a very strange way here with James and DM taking on the band's trademark watery psychedelia and doing a genuinely admirable job of it. While it's far from what I expected I do think it's the best song I've heard from the project in a LONG time and did a significant amount to boost my excitement for their upcoming return.

4. I'll Fight You - Open Mike Eagle
Another lyrically sharp track from Open Mike Eagle serves as the lead single for his new era and it's another satisfying moment in his infinitely enjoyable discography. The way the song turns from a near whisper into a much more confrontational style by the end makes for an exciting listen that holds up to repeat experiences.

3. Mango Feedback - Four Tet
Four Tet has always been one to release his music pretty much exclusively on his own terms and this is no different. Despite the seemingly random drop of new material he hits it out of the park with piercing chimes that cut in and out of the drums at the song's core and contrast perfectly with the strings. It's a great, beautiful little piece of house bliss.

2. Burning - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Two songs and two BIG hits for Karen O and company. Following up the more eye-catching optics of a duet with Perfume Genius with any other single was going to be difficult but Burning is honestly the better song here. Between the instantly catchy refrains and dark mix the song has a perfect platform to set up high-impact dramatic moments.

1. Super Freaky Girl - Nicki Minaj
One of the most anticipated new songs of the year has managed to live up to the hype as Nicki spins a VERY involved Superfreak sample into this confident and sexually charged banger. While the hook didn't grab me right away every single time I heard it the refrains stuck with me more. Not only does this track have the potential to be one of the best pop rap songs of the year, but if Nicki handles it right, one of the biggest hits as well.
