Best New Songs Of The Week: July 3rd, 2022
More big releases this week so lets not waste any time in sorting through them.
Enjoy <3
5. We're Not In Orbit Yet... - Broken Bells
After teasing the return of Broken Bells for years, the duo of Shins frontman James Mercer and Danger Mouse are finally back with this meandering five minute piece of spacey indie rock. It's lackadaisical approach makes the drifting through these passages sometimes feel a bit monotonous but when they hit their stride pairing exciting instrumentation with good refrains it makes for some amazing moments.
4. Hot Shit - Cardi B (Feat. Kanye West & Lil Durk)
Cardi's long awaited and highly anticipated new single is a collaborative effort with features from Durk and Kanye alongside a booming Tay Keith beat and even an Electric Boogie sample. It's a big swing for one of the biggest artists in the industry but does it work, sort of. Despite all the grandeur Cardi is actually right in her comfort zone with this extravagance which means the tone is decidedly familiar. It's a fitting summer banger and a good "event" song but maybe not an instant all time great.
3. Hell Is Here - Cryalot
Cryalot is the new solo project of Kero Kero Bonito singer Sarah Bonito and the lead single being called Hell is Here is no joke. Far from the exuberance of KKB the track is loud, uncompromising and soaked in enough distortion to pass for a recent Poppy single. The way the refrains sort of just methodically march on through an entire two and a half minutes is surprisingly effective and even beyond seeing the shock value of Sarah taking a turn for this, the song is very solid.
2. Royal Blue Walls - Jane Remover
One of the biggest surprises of the week comes from Jane Remover, the new alias of Dltzk which is shifting into a much more conventionally emo direction. But don't worry fans of the internet-core tinged distortion that littered last years Frailty because for all the raw and earnest emotion this thing delivers in its first few minutes it becomes an whirlwind of thick distortion and whispered refreains across the full excellent six minute runtime.
1. Bad Habit - Steve Lacy
After a lead single I wasn't crazy about Steve Lacy turned around pretty quickly and delivered this absolutely buttery R&B jam that grabs on to me and doesn't let go. It's such a smooth little combination of rumbling beats and gentle plucked strings that Lacy's unique voice is perfectly fit for and the whole song is just executed to perfection.
