Best New Songs Of The Week: June 5th, 2022

This week had some pretty big releases, only some of them paid off. Let's explore. <3

5. Training Montage - The Mountain Goats
The Mountain Goats have PLENTY of great ballads and slow songs, but after the last few years it's really nice to see them put some muscle behind this new single. The song absolutely jams with a hook that is made memorable by John Darnielle's unmistakably vocals and lyrics that are cute above what most indie acts are capable of, no surprise coming from a published author.

4. Marijuana's A Working Woman - of Montreal
Depending on who you ask it's either been a while, or a WHILE since they last loved an of Montreal record. While one good single doesn't promise much this track certainly reads as one of the bands most exciting and exploratory in years. The multi-faceted song bounces between murkier almost horror movie style passages with methodical vocals into snappy synth pop hooks and it's a combination that worked on me immediately.

3. Punk Rock Loser - Viagra Boys
Like most Viagra Boys songs I have no idea if this is good. The plodding pace of the song can be a bit taxing but I found that the refrains stuck in my head regardless. Really the reason it's a can't miss single is how funny and unique it is. Their songs continue to both defy expectation and play into them in a way that I just find enthralling and hilarious.

2. H2hoe - Cupcakke
Nobody does it quite like Cupcakke. After all these years you'd think she'd have written every single pussy and dick bar that she has to offer but she continues to be relentlessly raw and creative in her lyricism. On top of that immeasurable charm the song also has a memorable hook and a pulsating club beat that I really enjoy. It's one of her best tracks in a while.

1. Spitting Off The Edge Of The World - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Legendary indie act Yeah Yeah Yeahs are back and they're teaming up with one of my favorite voices in all of music, Mike Hadreas AKA Perfume Genius. The combination is just as dynamic as I had hoped using both vocalists' ability to bounce between intimate and grand to set up a fantastic hook. It's a rousing lead single that is sure to remind fans why YYY have the reputation they do.
