Best New Songs Of The Week: June 19th, 2022

While this may not have felt like a big week for singles Thursday night, when you take the entire weeks trickle down of anticipated new songs and album announcements into consideration it is actually pretty significant, so lets try and work through it. Enjoy <3

5. RAP JASM - Moor Mother (feat. AKAI Solo & justmadenice)
moor mother just continues being one of the most unique, creative and innovative voices in all of hip hop and all of music in general. While this new song plays it a little bit straighter than her typical outing if anything it only makes her credentials as a hip hop renaissance woman even stronger.

4. Ricochet - Preoccupations
One of the most acclaimed post-punk acts of the 2010's is back after a four-year absence and what they've brought with them is one of the most lively songs of their entire career. With clearer vocals and drums that punch through the blurry guitars in the mix this certainly isn't the Preoccupations you remember. While the track could use a bit sticker of a chorus it is mostly a very welcome return.

3. killer - FKA Twigs
After her mixtape earlier this year left people divided this new R&B pop fusion should have the stickiness to keep anyone around. Twigs rides a stark instrumental over the verses to set up a meaningful rush on the hook. While it is once again now the best hook I've ever heard from her it has enough to stick around.

2. The Highs & The Lows - Chance The Rapper & Joey Badass
So this is a bit of a surprise. Chance The Rapper back on the best list with this new excellent display of lyrical proficiency from both him and Joey. The song mirrors Chance's long running affair with gospel music but more so than almost any song he's released since Acid Rap it's all about twisting wordplay and charming rhymes this time around. I can't lie I enjoy it even though I'm very surprised to.

1. Eat Men Eat - Black Midi
Good luck predicting what Black Midi will do as this new single resembles a sea shanty more than it does their debut album. Regardless it's a looping and exciting journey that's as much fun to thematically untangle as it is to instrumentally digest. If maximalism is the name of the game, Black Midi continue to wear it well.
