Best New Songs Of The Week: May 8th, 2022

Oh another week. This time around there were two big headliners in terms of new singles but that didn't stop quite a few of the other new releases from standing out. Enjoy <3


5. D.M.B - A$AP Rocky

For a while now A$AP Rocky and Rihanna have been a celebrity couple purely in the paparazzi sense. From compelling photographs of two of the most gorgeous people on earth together to a hilarious stream of memes resulting from the great fake cheating scandal, that kind of couple. But now they officially graduate into a bonafide celeb couple through the guise of their work, or Rocky's work at least. With this new single and accompanying video their prescence is cemented, and the song itself isn't half bad either.

4. Degree - Cola

From the ashes of Ought, one of the best indie bands of the 2010's, came Cola. While the band hasn't quite blow me completely away yet I have been enjoying what they do more and more as the weeks go by and this is no different. This is a short and angular little piece of indie rock that has all the catchiness and muscles of some of my favorite Ought cuts.

3. No One Dies From Love - Tove Lo

While Tove Lo and her pretty dedicated fanbase have been toiling away in the pop underground for the past few album cycles it once again feels like she should be due for a breakout. Whether or not it will happen depends on how pessimistic you are about good music being rewarded. This Carly Rae Jepsen (hold onto that thought) flavored piece of 80's dance pop is excellent and follows an almost shockingly good contribution she made to the Euphoria soundtrack earlier this year. A Tove Lo 2022 would be MORE than welcome.

2. Bless Grips - 700 Bliss

Yet another absolutely dark banger from 700 Bliss, one of the most unique collaborations in hip hop and increasingly one of my most anticipated new projects of the year. This track delivers an insane rumbling instrumental and monotone but still absolutely lethal rapped refrains that are just utterly intoxicating.

1. Western Wind - Carly Rae Jepsen

Let a new era of the Carly Rae Jepsen hit parade begin. While this may not be quite as bombastic a lead single as we've come to expect from her it still has the shimmering pop stylings and infectious refrains that have been a hallmark of her last decade. The breezy and bouncy tribute to a very specific kind of weather manages to once again serve as a charming but never overbearing emotional metaphor delivered in her characteristically charming vocals.

jasmine.4.t is a British singer-songwriter who was announced last year as a new signee of the Phoebe Bridgers-led Saddest Factory record label. You Are The Morning  follows a trio of singles that dropped last year and features Phoebe Bridgers' entire group, boygenius, on production throughout the record as well as occasional backing vocals from the trio. I was extremely excited for the release of the album after loving all of the singles and this style of indie-folk and singer-songwriter music in general. Delightfully, Jasmine didn't disappoint. When I say my expectation were high for You Are The Morning  I mean it, because the album's three singles are an astounding bunch. Lead single "Skin On Skin" is a wonderfully written tune that's able to convey some unique sensations with the physical descriptions in its lyricism. ICONOCLASTS - Anna Von Hausswolff: Review

Anna Von Hausswolff is a singer/songwriter who has always made waves for their distinctly intense and occasionally brooding style of music that makes prominent use of the pipe organ. Her peak of critical acclaim came on 2018's brooding yet expansive Dead Magic . Her 2020 follow-up was an entirely instrumental record, meaning ICONOCLASTS  had the chance to be a long-awaited return to form. Instead, the record presents a sound both brighter and more intimate than ever before, but finds a similar level of fascination in doing so.  The singles predicted this shift in style, but they were all so good that I never had the chance to even be suspicious about it. "Facing Atlas" is the first of the singles to pop up on the record, and it's a great way to begin the experiment. The song sounds more like something you'd hear on a Susanne Sundfor record than what I expect from Anna. The beauty of its angelic chimes matches really well with a chapel-sized performance from Anna. ...

Getting Killed - Geese: Review

Review by Lavender: Geese are a NYC indie rock band that erupted onto the scene in 2023 with a breakthrough sophomore album,  3D Country. That record went on to become a major critical darling, and in 2024, the band's frontman, Cameron Winter, released a solo album that showed off a more intimate and singer-songwriter-influenced style. I was hoping that dynamic range would come together perfectly on the band's third album, which quickly became one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year for many indie fans. While I may not see the album as a slam-dunk masterpiece like some fans and critics have rushed to declare, it's undeniably great regardless.  A big reason for my excitement for this record was the trio of excellent singles released before it dropped. The second single, "Trinidad," is the first song in the tracklist, and what a ferocious start to the record it is.
