Best New Songs Of The Week: April 3rd, 2022

The Grammys are tonight, ick. While they will never achieve the level of industry admiration that the Oscars have, the great slap may have inspired the show to shoot for some kind of contrived attempt at cultural ubiquity. So assuming something meme worthy happens at the Grammys that then dominates the news cycle let's talk about these songs that came out this week while we still can. 


5. Deja Vu - Toro Y Moi

The upcoming Toro Y Moi album has the potential to be one of his best ever. After knocking my socks off with one of my favorite singles of the year so far Postman, Chaz came back just as strong with this breezy little psychedelic number. It perfectly combines his consistent delivery of chill wave bliss with an ear for instrumental texture that never fails.

4. Sirens - Flume (Feat. Caroline Polachek)

After what was a pretty standard pop and EDM fusion for his lead single, Flume is back with something more outside the lines and I really enjoy it. This song is utterly hypnotizing with its shimmering array of electronic sounds whirring away into the distant background while Caroline quite commandingly dominates the track with these really angelic vocals. The whole thing is loud and shrill but so easy to get lost in and completely entranced by.

3. Stevie - Warpaint

Another hit from the long awaited return of Warpaint. This track is more of a dreamy indie rock flavored experience but the progression is incredibly strong and the gentle nature of absolutely every sound in the track is so beautiful. While it may not be immediately apparent what makes it good, they play the long game and succeed because of it.

2. As It Was - Harry Styles

Given how world class Harry's last two lead singles were I can see why some people are underwhelmed by As It Was, which certainly seems like a safe choice. The breezy indie rock flavored song actually has a wonderful dreamy atmosphere to it and Harry continues to be overwhelmingly charming as a vocalist. So while he may not be setting the world on fire, there is plenty to love about this song.

1. All The Good Times - Angel Olsen

This starts off as one of the folkiest Angel Olsen songs to date but boy does it work through a compelling progression. Her eclectic vocal blend still presents both the nuances of great singer-songwriters and the ability to belt like a heartland rock great. She shows it all off here with a song that is swaying and beautiful, then dramatic and anthemic, and right back again. Excellent.

jasmine.4.t is a British singer-songwriter who was announced last year as a new signee of the Phoebe Bridgers-led Saddest Factory record label. You Are The Morning  follows a trio of singles that dropped last year and features Phoebe Bridgers' entire group, boygenius, on production throughout the record as well as occasional backing vocals from the trio. I was extremely excited for the release of the album after loving all of the singles and this style of indie-folk and singer-songwriter music in general. Delightfully, Jasmine didn't disappoint. When I say my expectation were high for You Are The Morning  I mean it, because the album's three singles are an astounding bunch. Lead single "Skin On Skin" is a wonderfully written tune that's able to convey some unique sensations with the physical descriptions in its lyricism. ICONOCLASTS - Anna Von Hausswolff: Review

Anna Von Hausswolff is a singer/songwriter who has always made waves for their distinctly intense and occasionally brooding style of music that makes prominent use of the pipe organ. Her peak of critical acclaim came on 2018's brooding yet expansive Dead Magic . Her 2020 follow-up was an entirely instrumental record, meaning ICONOCLASTS  had the chance to be a long-awaited return to form. Instead, the record presents a sound both brighter and more intimate than ever before, but finds a similar level of fascination in doing so.  The singles predicted this shift in style, but they were all so good that I never had the chance to even be suspicious about it. "Facing Atlas" is the first of the singles to pop up on the record, and it's a great way to begin the experiment. The song sounds more like something you'd hear on a Susanne Sundfor record than what I expect from Anna. The beauty of its angelic chimes matches really well with a chapel-sized performance from Anna. ...

Getting Killed - Geese: Review

Review by Lavender: Geese are a NYC indie rock band that erupted onto the scene in 2023 with a breakthrough sophomore album,  3D Country. That record went on to become a major critical darling, and in 2024, the band's frontman, Cameron Winter, released a solo album that showed off a more intimate and singer-songwriter-influenced style. I was hoping that dynamic range would come together perfectly on the band's third album, which quickly became one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year for many indie fans. While I may not see the album as a slam-dunk masterpiece like some fans and critics have rushed to declare, it's undeniably great regardless.  A big reason for my excitement for this record was the trio of excellent singles released before it dropped.
