Best New Songs Of The Week: April 24th, 2022

This was a busy week full of big announcements, highly anticipated singles and the start of some promising new eras. For the second week in a row I had quite a tricky time putting this list together.

5. Down - Hot Chip
After one of the more unconventional eras of their career a few years ago Hot Chip seemed to announce a return to the basics with this bright, catchy and incredibly dancy lead single. With punchy percussion and irresistible synths all built around an earworm sample it's very easy to explain and experience the great things about the track.

4. Hips - Warpaint
This new era of Warpaint tracks has been defined by a gentle but sleek sound and this song is no different with playful basslines and ethereal vocal melodies. The percussion continues to be a huge highlight and the circular jam it goes on throughout the final 30 seconds is like icing on the cake. This is quickly becoming one of my most anticipated projects of the year.

3. Free In The Knowledge - The Smile
Radiohead parallel project The Smile are no strangers to the best new tracks of the week list, with this being their 4th appearance on it this year. But as long as they keep dropping great tracks like this they aren't going anywhere. This song starts off with a poetic subtlety that Radiohead fans will note from many of their saddest tunes. But it works into a beautifully orchestrated and full body ballad over an extremely satisfying four minutes.

2. Heloise - Meditations On Crime
Meditations On Crime is a new super group of sorts combining the creativity of singer-songwriters Julia Holter and Harper Simon as well as Animal Collective's own Geologist. While it is a decidedly random collection of talent they come together to make something really beautiful on this track which combines Julia's stunning balladry with some of the watery and psychedelic effects you'd expect from an AnCo song. The results are strikingly surreal and very memorable.

1. Plan B - Megan Thee Stallion
WHAT an interesting turn for Megan. This new song embodies some of the fiery and bombastic personality of the most prominent 2000's rap. She brings to this an absolute boatload of swagger and the sexy confidence we've come to expect from a Megan song. It sounds unlike anything she's ever done before and if the beat doesn't grab you right away, it won't take long for Megan to.
