Best New Songs Of The Week: April 17th, 2022

While I've been doing a lot more of watching Coachella sets than listening to new music this weekend, I still took the time to lay out some of the best new songs released this week. Enjoy <3

5. About Damn Time - Lizzo
Lizzo had quite a big weekend releasing this highly anticipated new single which came with an announcement of the similarly titled album and a performance of the song on Saturday Night Live. While the song itself may not quite live up to those expectations it is a catchy and dancy flavored piece of throwback funk pop with more than a spoonful of confidence mixed in.

4. Something Changed - Interpol
After a rough lead single Interpol are back on track with this song which does their methodical and creeping brand of post-punk much more justice. When the slick guitar riff and kick drum open up the chorus it makes for a wonderful moment that harkens back to so many highlights from Interpol's discography.

3. Hatefuck - Pussy Riot (Feat. Slayyyter)
Banger alert. This combination of rumbling bass heavy intense verses and a borderline K-Pop shimmering group chorus is, interesting. While the verses are by far the highlight, one in particular, I have to say that the whole song is juts generally enjoyable. I love the unwavering confidence sexually charged almost brutal lyrical style. And let's just talk about Slayyyter. People are going to stop inviting her on tracks because she just steals the show every single time. In a pretty limited appearance she makes both the most memorable lyrical claims and best refrains on the whole song.

2. Doritos & Fritos - 100 Gecs
The dream team of meme heavy hyperpop is back at it and they're leaning into their charming silliness as much as ever. The increasing favoritism of ska horns comes in perfectly alongside the songs killer pre-chorus. While I'm not quite as crazy about the hook itself the bombastic and restless blitz of sounds that the song presents is irreplaceable, and the song that results is incredibly fun.

1. Let's Do It Again - Jamie xx
Jamie xx is back with a new single, a Coachella set tonight that I'm highly anticipating and hopefully a new album soon. While Let's Do It Again may not be the kind of seamless and genre blurring electronica Jamie makes at his best, his stripped back focus on house music aesthetics and design pays off. It's a life affirming piece of bright house music with a great vocal sample at its core and the touch to make its wandering composition worthwhile.
