Best New Songs Of The Week: April 10th, 2022

This was yet another busy week for both new singles and new album alike. While I've been sorting through hours and hours of music I have to say that I'm quite impressed by the collection of singles we got and narrowing it down to this list was actually pretty difficult. Enjoy <3

5. First Class - Jack Harlow

For the most part up to this point Jack Harlow has impressed mainly with his larger than life bragging, catchy hooks and general ability to avoid doing anything problematic. Not only has this song established him as a force in commercial music but it also set a kind of new bar for his level of creativity with this track being built around a sample of Fergie's Glamourous. While it still has the scope of a simple pop rap song he pulls it off very well.

4. Water Table - Cola

This might be the best single Cola has released yet and it looks back to some of the best Ought songs for its foundation. The steady drums and gentle echoey plucks of guitar are a perfect backing for Tim Darcy's unique vocals style that always sounds on the verge of a breakdown. It's an emotional method of songwriting that helps them wring potential out of every moment.

3. Cayo - Arca

Arca continues to impress with nearly everything she does. This is a blending of new and old which features her stark harrowing balladry but also some sour and distant synth lines. It elevates the whole song to this fantastical level that's just intoxicating. Arca continues to be an artist whose sound is both instantly identifiable but difficult to define.

2. Neck & Wrist - Pusha T (feat. Jay-Z)

Seeing two of the best to ever do it getting on a song together had my expectations through the roof which is probably why I wasn't crazy about this when I first heard it earlier in the week. After sitting with it for a few days I've come around to the song quite a bit. The beat is great and even the weird vocalizations that everyone has been talking about are actually deployed in a way that adds impact to particular moments. It certainly isn't the best song I've heard from these two, but I like it.

1. Alma - Melody's Echo Chamber

On her bilingual new single Melody Prochet once again impresses with her Echo Chamber project on a breezy indie ballad. Her fragile vocals and the combination of steady drumming with flourishes of piano and strings makes for an absolutely luscious sound palette. The whole thing is dreamy, blissful and incredibly memorable.
