Best New Songs Of The Week: March 13th, 2022

I have nothing of any importance to say this week aside from the fact that it was the best week for new singles in quite a while. Enjoy <3

5. Wild Child - The Black Keys
Dan and Patrick are back and clearly influenced by their spin as a Missouri Delta covers band because this is their busiest piece of original material in years. While it is instantly satisfying to see them turn back the clock and there's a guitar bridge on the song that can only be defined as "sweet", I'm not sure this is quite as infectious and instantaneous as their best material. Still loving the change of pace.

4. Sweetest Pie - Megan Thee Stallion (Feat. Dua Lipa)
Is this a purely pop motivated turn for Megan, yes. But it's also a really enjoyable song with Dua's charming hook and the combination of typically hip hop centric trap drums with those walls of warbling synths that go together surprisingly well. I love that Dua is allowed more than just the hook on the song even if some of her refrains translate slightly awkwardly into Megan's verses. I would not be surprised in the slightest if this becomes a hit.

3. My Love - Florence + The Machine
Another very solid single from a band I'm not exactly used to having that high expectations for, sorry fans. This spin into electro pop features the exact brand of harrowing high points and instrumental density that have made so many classic FatM tracks tick and her arena sized performances continue to impress.

2. No Prizes - Kae Tempest (Feat. Lianne La Havas)
After dropping a really impressive lead single earlier this year Kae is back and teaming up with Lianne La Havas on this gentle and beautiful tune. The lyricism is direct but still high impact and the stark piano instrumental works perfectly with the understated performances from both artists. This is another single and another hit for Kae in my book.

1. The Dripping Tap - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Ah the age old question of where to place the 18 minute Australian acid rock among the ambitions of the weeks newest pop tunes. Obviously this thing sets its compositional goals at a bit more of an expansive tone. The band does a pretty good job at effectively transitioning through a number of different sounds they've explored throughout their career across this nearly 20 minute epic and I honestly find it a pretty compelling listen throughout, a refreshing return to form from the band.
